It was a game that showed how much the USMNT still has to grow as they were exposed to Dutch counters. It’s an American team that hasn’t scored a goal in open play during the group stages heading into Saturday. Denzel Dumfries dominated on the wing with two assists and a goal to his name.

The Americans were without Josh Sargent, who did not dress because of an ankle injury, and they missed his presence because of his lack of attack and mobility. The U.S. was mesmerized playing the game prepared by Netherlands manager Louis van Gaal.

In the Dutch opening goal, Cody Kakpo made room for Debay to finish off the chance created by Dumfries through the USA’s midfield. Again just before half-time, a fullback Sergino Test flat-footed a blind fullback to fullback to finish in the goal, and it played Dutch style. Changes came at half-time as Gio Reina came on for Jesus Ferreira, but it wasn’t enough to get back into the game. Haji Wright pulled one back from the Netherlands’ slump before Dumfries put their excellent form out of sight with an 81st-minute goal.
