The UFC is back in Abu Dhabi. The promotion is set to host UFC 280 on Saturday night from the now famous Yas Island. The co-main event is headlined by a lightweight title bout between former champion Charles Oliveira and rising contender Islam Makhachev. The pair has won 21 fights in a row and both have completed incredible ground games.
“I’m always ready for a tough fight,” Makachev told CBS Sports. “I don’t want to say it’s an easy match or anything like that because I have to give this guy respect. He came from a hard life. The hard way because there are so many hard fights in the UFC. He did it. Not the easy way.
“I have to respect Charles, but I can’t respect some people like Michael Sandler who talk too much [Chandler] Feet? He beat Tony Ferguson, he almost retired — he should retire, but he’s still fighting. And he beat Don Hooker. [Chandler] He is 2-2 in the UFC and is trying to get a title fight. It doesn’t work that way.”
Aside from the main event, the co-feature sees a title in the matchup to catch the fan’s eye. Bantamweight kingpin Aljamine Sterling is set to face former titleholder DJ Dillashaw. It will be Sterling’s second defense of the 135-pound title and the first since his two-fight streak with Petr Yan. Dillashaw underwent knee surgery in 2021 and returned after a two-year USADA suspension.
