The United States has been confirmed to host both the 2031 Men’s Rugby World Cup and the 2033 Women’s Rugby World Cup, as World Rugby sets the agenda for the next 11 years.
The announcement came on Thursday in Dublin, with Australia set to host the 2025 Women’s Rugby World Cup, the 2027 Men’s Rugby World Cup and the 2029 Women’s Rugby World Cup.
Australia and the United States have been announced as the double hosts for both matches, the first time in two years that World Rugby – the governing body of the game – has hosted two major matches in the same country as part of a new strategy. The results were announced last November.

Following on from the 2023 Men’s World Cup in France, England will host the 2025 Women’s World Cup (previously held in 2010), and is poised to increase the number of qualifying teams from 12 to 16.
The 2027 Men’s World Cup in Australia continues in the Northern Hemisphere (2015 England, 2019 Japan, 2023 France) and their bid is ahead of Argentina, while Russia withdrew in December 2020. This is the second time Australia has hosted the Men’s World Cup. Cup after 2003, it will be held from September 10 to October 23, 2027.
Following the 2021 World Cup delay in New Zealand in October 2022, the 2029 World Cup will be hosted by women for the second time in the Southern Hemisphere.
The announcement comes after World Rugby reaffirmed that both world rugby will enter into “exclusive discussions” with the United States over hosting global rugby events in 2031 and 2033. The United States was initially interested in hosting the 2027 Men’s Games but turned their attention to 2031, giving them enough time to make their plans better.

President Joe Biden announced his support for the US initiative in April and said the government guarantees needed to hold such a competition would be “enforced by competent and authoritative officials.” Biden said he expects the government to help “deliver the most successful Rugby World Cups in history.” The world rugby talk about the nine-year runway gives them enough time to change the game in the United States as they prepare to host the biggest events in rugby.
