San Francisco residents voted overwhelmingly Tuesday to recall District Attorney Chesa Poutin. One of the most progressive top lawyers in the country.
Partial results from the San Francisco Electoral College on Tuesday night showed that the withdrawal process – also known as Proposition H – had the support of nearly 60% of voters, with 40% voting against it.
Bowden sought to reform the criminal justice system, stop the use of cash bail, stop prosecuting juvenile adults, and focus on reducing the prison population. Govt-19 Infection. Bowden is also credited with being the first San Francisco DA to record murder charges against city police officers.
At an election night rally, Bowdin told his supporters he was about to embark on a drive for criminal justice reform.
“We have two cities. We have two justice systems. One of us is different for the rich and the well-connected. Everyone else. That’s what we’re fighting to change,” he said.
“We know this is an organization that has failed us systematically, not only for decades, but for generations.”

San Francisco Mayor London will elect a replacement for Breitbowdin.
Whoever is appointed to fill Boudin’s remaining term until 2023 must run in the general election.
Proponents of her case have been working to make the actual transcript of this statement available online Boutin – a longtime public defender – has not aggressively prosecuted criminals, and he said the establishment of progressive policies endangers the safety of residents. They spent more than $ 7 million to spread the word to voters in San Francisco during the campaign.
“This election does not mean that San Francisco has moved to the far right in our approach to criminal justice,” Mary Jung, leader of the recall campaign, said in a statement. “In fact, San Francisco has been a national beacon for progressive criminal justice reform for decades and will continue to do so with new leadership.”
As hate crimes against Asian Americans increased dramatically in San Francisco, the pace of remembrance of Putin in 2021 increased and victims blamed Bowden and said he was in favor of the perpetrators. Proponents of her case have been working to make the actual transcript of this statement available online.
Boudin’s team maintained throughout the campaign that there was no direct link between the increase in some crimes and the DA’s policies. But Tuesday night’s results show that voters did not buy the message.
The recall in San Francisco could have implications for other progressive, reform-minded lawyers across the country. Boudin won in 2019 because progressive lawyers promised to focus on alternatives to imprisonment and hold police officers accountable.
In Los Angeles, organizers are now close enough to collect enough signatures to force a recall vote for their district attorney, George Gasken. He was elected in 2020 and previously served as DA of San Francisco. His resignation and transfer to Southern California paved the way for Boudin to take office.
There are still votes to count and the election results must be certified before Breit can appoint a replacement.
Breit has not officially weighed in on the DA recall. In October 2019, following Cascon’s resignation, Breit appointed Susie Loftus, the former head of the San Francisco Police Commission, as interim DA.
During that November election, Boudin received an initial 36% support, but San Francisco’s ranking-choice voting system defeated Loftus by less than 3,000 votes.
Last month, Catherine Stephanie, district two supervisor, became the city’s first elected official to approve the recall. Several political activists involved in the recall told CBS News that Breit could consider Stephanie a viable alternative.
