14 people, including 3 children, were shot dead in East Garfield Park. ‘It’s over in three seconds.’

Chicago police said 14 people, including three children, were shot and killed in a shooting Monday night in East Garfield Park on the West Side.

The children are ages 3, 11 and 13, police Supt. David Brown told reporters. All three were in critical condition. The victims were between the ages of 31 and 56, police said.

Police said the shooting happened around 9 p.m. in the 2700 block of West Flournoy Street as some were out for a vigil and others were out for Halloween. I don’t know who this awareness is for.

“It was over in three seconds,” Brown said outside Stroger Hospital, where many of the wounded were taken. “After the car drove off it came out and fired randomly into the crowd.

“We have no motive,” he said, adding that authorities believe there were two shooters.

“We’re always concerned about retaliation obviously, but we don’t know enough about whether it was a gang fight or some personal conflict, but once we know we’ll share that with the public,” Brown said. “If that is true, we are deploying additional police resources to the area to ensure we can prevent any retaliation.”

All the victims were taken to hospitals with injuries ranging from critical to non-life-threatening, police said. A 37-year-old man and a 48-year-old man are in critical condition, police said. A large number of injured were taken to Stroger Hospital.

A woman was hit by a car while trying to escape the gunfire, police said. She was in good condition with scratches on her body. No one is in custody.

Brown said the shooting was captured on police surveillance video, which investigators are reviewing. Detectives are also waiting for victims to complete treatment so they can interview them.
