BRC:
First of all how did the whole thing with Steve Forbes unfold?
MAYWEATHER: Well, I used to work with Steve
in the past, I even worked with him for a few fights of the Contender. When Steve
heard that Floyd Jr. didn't want Roger to train Steve for fear that he could
help Steve defeat Oscar and cost them both lots of money, Steve immediately
called me and asked me to step in for Roger. I said yes without any hesitation.
BRC:
Although many will argue that De La Hoya is past it, most people still think he
will beat Forbes with no problem. Forbes is much smaller and has less power,
what do you see in him that makes him have the edge over Oscar?
MAYWEATHER: We're both being put in a very
tough situation with the
fight between Floyd Jr. and Oscar all but made; makes it a very difficult
task at hand. Just like when the Hopkins versus De La Hoya fight was
made, the only way Oscar was going to lose was by KO and that is very
rare with Oscar . Honestly, I thought he lost to Sturm but I think too
much was at stake to give a decision to a guy that couldn't generate any
capital for the sport of boxing and certainly not in the United States.
Steve is facing the same task. With that being said, we're working
extremely hard to pull off a huge upset. Steve has to get inside and
utilize his hand speed and this is boxing so it only takes one shot to
change the outcome of a fight. We also know that for Steve this is an
opportunity of a lifetime. He is actually in a win-win situation; as
long as he puts up a great effort or makes a big enough impression on
the boxing public there will be other big fights out there. The only
outcome that would hurt Steve is to be blown out early and I can't see
that happen. We're coming to win but we also are realistic about what
we're up against.
BRC:
What weight will this fight be at?
MAYWEATHER: 150 lbs.
BRC:
It’s a little late, but what did you feel went wrong with the Klitschko-Ibragimov fight? What’s next for him?
MAYWEATHER: One thing was that Sultan hurt
his left hand
really bad previous to the fight and also Wladimir didn't give us a
real chance by fighting an extremely cautious fight and he fought a
smart fight. He fought the way that a taller man is supposed to fight a
smaller man and it made for a very uneventful fight, and he never gave
us any real chance to land a big shot by engaging in a heads up
battle. What's next for him right now, I have no idea.
BRC: I
guess this means you are no longer training Guzman for his upcoming
fight with Arthur, since they’re also fighting on the 3rd of May?
MAYWEATHER: The
fight with me training Guzman never materialized. He had decided that
with my brother Floyd being in camp with Oscar that he would rather
just train with his former trainer rather than change trainers again, being that he has changed at least four different trainers within the
last two years. I understood that and fortunately for me even something
bigger came a long.
BRC:
This will be your second time on HBO this year. Are you happy to be a
part of some more public fights after always being known as the “other”
Mayweather?
MAYWEATHER: I’m happy of course, for the
opportunity to be seen on HBO
and being able to showcase my skills as a trainer. It's unfortunate that
I have been in the underdog role on both occasions but if you can make
it on HBO you must be doing something right.
BRC: You
actually fought Oscar in the very early stages of his career, is
there anything from that fight that will help you utilize a plan for
this fight?
MAYWEATHER: Well, Oscar beat me, so I
certainly can't share my
experiences with Steve to help him win but the Oscar that fought me then
isn't the same Oscar. He has had a whole career from the time we fought,
but as a trainer I have a totally different outlook and also I have
knowledge to beat almost any fighter. I study fighters strengths and
weaknesses and have the fighter that I'm training expose those
weaknesses on the night of the fight, by working on it everyday in training
camp...
BRC: Any
closing comments?
MAYWEATHER: Well, watch history being made
on HBO. Two
brothers working against each other and coming out of opposite corners.
Watch the Mayweather brothers match wits!
BRC: As always, thanks Jeff.
