YATES' MEMO ON TRINIDAD-MAYORGA

By Darren Yates, from Down Under

For a man who has been retired for two years, Saturday's performance is as brilliant as it gets! For a guy who is built a little awkwardly and does not have great natural balance, Felix Trinidad never fails to amaze me with the consistent results he achieves in the ring.

I think the reason Felix Trinidad was knocked down in the 3rd round was due to what I perceive to be his ordinary balance. I didn't see Trinidad complain so he must have felt it was a legitimate knockdown. Also Felix was knocked back hard by a Mayorga jab in the first round, another indication that Trinidad is only blessed with average balance I believe.

Trinidad is as fresh yesterday as he was 3 years ago against Joppy. His defense and glove positioning was superb and the most impressive factor from my point of view. Trinidad's combination punching was awesome, this fight reminded me of the beating he gave Yori Boy Campas for his first loss all those years ago!

I think Ricardo Mayorga was pretty dumb leaving his hands down and letting Trinidad hit him. I don't care whether you have a chin like Marvin Hagler or Bernard Hopkins, you don't let a skilled puncher like Felix Trinidad hit you clean with your guard down. Those tactics didn't last too long anyway!

Hopkins-Trinidad must happen next, they are both hot NOW and this is probably the biggest super fight out there now. There should be no wasting time with ridiculous negotiations, just do it! Don King, MAKE THIS HAPPEN!

As for Ricardo Mayorga, thank you for providing entertainment in your bouts even though the foolish macho behavior really hurt you this time round. I will always be grateful to Mayorga for ridding the boxing world of one the most boring fighters around, Vernon "The clinching king" Forrest. Speaking of Forrest, has he fought since he lost to Mayorga? I haven't cared enough to keep up with his whereabouts!
