"BLIND ROBBERY IN GERMANY"

By Darren Yates from Down Under

I thought I would never see the day an Australian boxer would be ripped of worse than Jeff Fenech was in his first bout with Azumah Nelson. I was wrong! Danny Green out jabbed, out worked, out boxed, out punched and out muscled WBC Super Middleweight champion Marcus Beyer in Nurenberg, Germany on Saturday night. Beyer barely landed many effective punches and did not win any of the 5 rounds (if point deductions were not counted). Danny Green was disqualified for an alleged deliberate head butt that was supposed to have opened a cut on Beyer; the problem is that the cut was already there from round two and was caused by clean and legal punches.

I will never say a bad word again about Don King and his influence on boxing officials. Don King looks like a saint compared to the German thugs and bullies who promoted the Green-Beyer bout.

The first round started out fairly clean with Green stalking Beyer landing an educated and stiff jab. Green soon started to mix his attack with sharp right crosses and crisp left hooks. Towards the end of the first round, Green's thudding left jab had Beyer concerned as the two fought inside close range. Green used his angle and caught Beyer with a perfect right hook on the nose that firmly planted the German on the seat of his pants, reminiscent of the way Kostya Tszyu caught Jake Rodriguez in the first round of their bout.

The second round was more of the same with the less experienced Green totally out boxing Beyer. Green opened a cut over the German's right eye with the constant barrage of punches. Again towards the end of the second, Green caught Beyer with two right hand shots to the chin that sat the German down for a second time.

In the 3rd and 4th rounds there were no knockdowns but Green continued to dominate his more experienced opponent. In the same fashion, Green's punches were making the cut over Beyer's eye worse and the stiff left jab from Green was causing swelling around and under the eye also. Green was boxing like a seasoned professional and controlling the bout well; not bad considering Beyer was the first southpaw opponent Green had ever faced as a pro boxer.

By the end of the 4th round, Beyer's cut was already severe enough for the bout to be stopped, but to the German's credit, he was brave and did not want to give up his title that easily. Beyer came out in the 5th and turned up his work rate and was more effective than in any of the previous rounds. Midway through the fifth Beyer tripped into Green head first and then tackled Green whom responded by throwing the grappling German off himself. Then the referee warns Green for rough housing tactics and butting when it was so clear that it was the German who had accidentally caused the head clash and instigated the grappling. The referee then signals to the officials that the existing cut was caused by the butt and Green was furious because of the blatant favoritism shown by the referee to the hometown fighter.

Later in the 5th round Beyer clinches again and Green tries to breakout recklessly moving head and shoulders catching Beyer. This was what the Germans were waiting for, a way out of a certain loss. The referee deducts a point from Green, then changes his mind and deducts two points. The German ringside doctor showed a complete lack of impartiality by asking the referee if the butt was going to be ruled intentional, when the referee said yes, the doctor advises that Beyer can not continue. It didn't really matter to the doctor that Beyer's eye was no worse than it was at the end of the 4th round.

Now the German promoter starts his antics, he was blatantly interfering with the referee and exerting tremendous pressure to have Green disqualified. It took nearly 20 minutes for the German promoters and officials to work out a way to disqualify Green. The referee kept changing his mind, as he had called for the bout to go to the scorecards, but when the Germans found out their man was still behind, even after the two points deduction against Green, they had to interfere even more!

The referee and the ringside WBC rules committee (whoever they were!) were pressured into making an incorrect decision. The WBC rules said a cut CAUSED by a deliberate head butt would result in the offending fighter being disqualified. A conflict of interest was very evident as the cut was originally caused by LEGAL PUNCHES in the second round of the bout. The German thug promoters and officials saw their get out of jail free card and pursued it to get Green disqualified.

Both fighters to their credit maintained their composure during the whole farcical ending to the fight and they shook hands and showed good sportsmanship. As Beyer was standing around in the ring after he had addressed the crowd, the ring doctor was comforting him like a corner man would; something really smelt rotten, such blatant conflicting interests should not be tolerated by the WBC.

I can see why Roy Jones Jr. and Lennox Lewis refuse to fight in Germany. I wouldn't blame any fighter for refusing to take a bout in Germany. It has been said that a foreign fighter can't win a decision in Germany. Now it appears you can't win by knockout either because this bout should have been ruled a 5th round TKO in favour of Danny Green. I am struggling to work out how these German promoters let Corrie Sanders out of their country with the WBO belt he won from Wlad Klitchko. I'm surprised these thugs who call themselves promoters in Germany didn't try to disqualify Sanders for punching their fighter. It is clear that they view it unacceptable for one of their fighters to be beaten and they've proven they will go to any lengths to protect their promotional interests. Perhaps we shall see them in the future writing into a challenger's contract that he is not expected to win and not legally allowed to try.

I know in boxing reversals of decisions are very rarely made. This is a justified case where Danny green should be awarded the WBC belt, and why not? How many times did the referee and officials change their minds and manipulate the rules to get their way?

At the very least Danny Green should be awarded an instant rematch (sorry Eric Lucas, Green was giving Beyer a bigger beating than you did) and boy, I hope Jeff Fenech can get this to happen in Australia away from the thugs who call themselves promoters in Germany!
