A NEW POWER AT WELTERWEIGHT, PAUL 'THE PUNISHER' WILLIAMS...
by
Frank Gonzalez Jr.
Standing at six foot-one inch tall, southpaw
Welterweight Prospect, Paul “The Punisher” Williams
(31-0, 23 KO’s) lived up to his nick name Saturday
night in Reno Nevada, when he punished little five
foot-seven inch, Sharmba “Little Big Man” Mitchell
(57-6, 31 KO’s) for four rounds in a scheduled twelve
round mismatch.
The fight was a tale of two prizefighters going in
opposite directions, in a battle between a shop worn
Mitchell, a former Champion and current stepping-stone
fighter, descending into the twilight of his
career—against the young and relentless, Paul
Williams, a potential star on the way up.
WILLIAMS TOO BIG FOR 'LITTLE BIG MAN' MITCHELL - KO 4...by George Elsasser
The big coming out party, in with a seriously over
seasoned former champion Sharmba Mitchell, was more
about the need of a name scalp on the rap sheet -
Williams enters undefeated 30-0 with 22 by knockout,
but a peek at the victims made for more a glow than a
glitter.
Sharmba had a mini flash of success with a well placed
combination in stanza two - bad news is what looked
nice on camera, also showed the neat connect had zero
impact on the undefeated one - and from that point on
it’s all downhill for the little big man.
The 25-year-old Paul “The Punisher”
Williams, hailing from Aiken, Georgia, is 31 - 0 (23
KOs) and is ranked #1 by the IBF, WBA, WBC and WBO. He
took a national stage once again on HBO’s Boxing After
Dark, or what I very respectfully call “The Max
Kellerman Show.” The fighter Max calls “the unique
freak” thoroughly dismantled the battle-tested former
140 lbs. champion Sharmba Mitchell, who was on his
back 4 times in 4 rounds. Williams used his 82” reach to
surgically destroy Mitchell, forcing ref Vic
Drakulich to mercifully end the fight at 2:57 of
round 4.
WILLIAMS CONTINUES HIS RISE WITH 4TH ROUND STOPPAGE OVER
MITCHELL... by Chris Robinson
Moments ago at the Reno Events
Center in Reno, Nevada, Paul ‘The Punisher’ Williams
upped his record to 31-0 (23) with a 4th round
stoppage over game but outgunned Sharmba Mitchell.
From the outset Williams pressed the issue, letting
his hands go and connecting clean blows on the smaller
Mitchell. Sharmba dug down and did connect with the
occasional looping shot but they were simply few and
far between for the former 2-time champion. Williams
dropped Mitchell once in the 3rd and three more times
in the 4th before referee Vic Drakulich called a halt
to the contest.
In the main event, top-rated
welterweight contender Paul Williams (30-0, 22 KOs), from Augusta, Georgia,
faces former two-time junior welterweight champion Sharmba Mitchell (57-5,
30 KOs), from Washington D.C., in a scheduled 12-round, welterweight
contest. At 6'2" with a 79-inch reach and southpaw stance, the 24-year old
Williams has become one of the more highly touted and often avoided
welterweight prospects in the sport.
