VITALI KLITSCHKO RETAINS WBC TITLE WITH 9TH ROUND STOPPAGE OF JUAN CARLOS GOMEZ ... by Larry Flores

In a fight that surely will not make the “Boxing Classic” series,  “WBC” Heavyweight champion Vitali “Dr. Ironfist” Klitschko, stopped a game but outclassed Juan Carlos Gomez, “The Black Panther” from Cuba,  in the 9th round at Stuttgart, Germany.

Making his second appearance after returning from a four-year retirement,  Klitschko (36-2 with 35 KOs) was just too big and awkward for Gomez (44-1 with 35 KOs), the former world Cruiserweight champion.  After a round that saw both fighters playing “patty-cake” by swatting down each others’ gloves in a comical display,  Klitschko began to assert his “attack” on Gomez.  By “attack” I mean Klitschko would throw a futile half-jab and the fighters would end up in a clinch.

March 21, Stuttgart, Germany Report... by Per-Ake Persson
Chris Byrd, fresh off three weeks of sparring with Vitali Klitschko, stopped outclassed German Mathias Sandow in the fourth of a scheduled eight-rounder. Byrd, down to cruiser, looked fit, trim and toyed with his opponent before opening up in the fourth forcing a stoppage.

Tony "the Tiger" Thompson, also a sparring partner for Vitali, had a much tougher opponent in Adnan Serin but won a fifth round TKO when Serin's chief cornerman threw in the towel.

There was a final ten count for WBC representative Edmund Lipinski, 74, who passed away in Stuttgart Friday. Lipinski's last creation was the WBC Baltic Sea title and he was also the man behind the CIS / Slovanic title that at first was sort of a "pirate" organization before Lipinski got affiliated with the Russian Federation-

American heavy Nathan James got an easy win when Taras Varva injured his shoulder 15 seconds into the very first round and was unable to continue.

VITALI KLITSCHKO TKO'S J. C. GOMEZ IN NINE... by Frank Gonzalez Jr.
Saturday afternoon, ESPN Classic and ESPN2 aired the Heavyweight Championship fight between WBC titlist Vitali Klitschko (37-2, 36 KO’s) and Juan Carlos Gomez (44-2, 35 KO’s). The fight took place in a tiny ring at the Hanns Martin Schleyer Halle in Stuttgart, Germany.

Klitschko has sparred with Gomez and they know each other a bit. After being away from boxing for almost four years and then coming back and administering a beating to former titlist Sam Peter, Vitali Klitschko looked great. He made easy work of Peter, who’s usually a very tough fight for anyone. Vitali didn’t expect the southpaw Gomez to be an easy fight.
For a heavyweight fight, this one was fairly entertaining.

VITALI KLITSCHKO RETAINS WBC BAUBLE VIA TKO9... by George Elsasser

The ESPN heavyweight Saturday special from Stuttgart, Germany saw Vitali Klitschko successfully retaining the WBC title with a stanza nine stoppage of game but outgunned Juan Carlos Gomez.

This mismatch proved more about size and power, than sweet science skills, as the bigger Klitschko methodically broke down Gomez with each passing round - early on it was a cut eye, and later, a round seven knockdown was clearly the handwriting on the wall.

UNVEILING JUAN CARLOS GOMEZ... by Ricky Ray Taylor

I guess I feel this same nagging feeling about "The Black Panther" Juan Carlos Gomez. By taking a look at this monster's stats on paper it's difficult not to be SOLD.  Gomez stands 6' 4", weighs in the 240+ range and has an awkward Cuban Southpaw stance to back up his incredible 44-1 record.  Nice, huh?  Maybe he'll even have a shot to halt the 4 fight KO streak of his next opponent (3/21 ~ ESPN) WBC Heavyweight Champion Vitali Klitschko?
Well, maybe, yet it is highly doubtful.
Hey, I've seen Gomez fight about five times and just can't make myself like him.  Gomez hasn't fought one top 15 opponent, ever!  How he got the title-shot "gift" to face Klitschko for the WBC Championship over countless more worthy contenders is politics at its best.

MARTIN WADE'S MARCH PAD WORK - PART TWO...
March 21 Klitschko vs. Gomez:
The big man, fresh off of taking Samuel Peter's lunch money is doing the right thing by staying busy. That the broadcast will be an afternoon feed from ESPN is also encouraging, look for the network to give this fight the championship treatment. Gomez, the "Black Panther," was a very solid cruiserweight and thought to be an interesting interloper to the division a couple of years ago. The same intrigue that surrounds David Haye used to surround the Cuban so I look for the cocky Gomez to bring his deep skill set to the afternoon festivities. Klitschko is a year older and if Gomez can come in shape and use movement and angles this fight could get interesting. Meanwhile, baby brother can't seem to get anything put together with David Haye or Chris Arreola.
