MOSLEY-VARGAS: EXCITEMENT AND
DISAPPOINTMENT... by Aladdin Freeman
Watching this past weekend’s fight between Shane Mosley
and Fernando Vargas I was excited about the fight but a little disappointed
about how it turned out. I thought Fernando Vargas did what he had to do in
order for him to have a successful time versus the smaller Shane Mosley.
However, it didn’t lead to an exciting fight because he was so careful about
not getting into many exchanges with Mosley, having learned from his mistakes
versus Trinidad and De la Hoya.
VARGAS IS IN DENIAL, MOSLEY REMAINS SWEET
AND LAMPLEY WAS MISSED... by Elisa Harrison
Vargas was so sure of himself -or so foolish- that he publicly
challenged his opponent to a $100,000 side bet, the pot going to whichever man
scored the knockout. A seemingly put on the spot Mosley accepted the
challenge, and we all looked forward to fight night, hoping to get decisive
answers on whether Vargas was all talk and whether Mosley could still walk the
walk.
TKO VICTORY OVER VARGAS RETURNS 'SUGAR'
SHANE MOSLEY TO THE LIMELIGHT...by
Mike Leanardi @ ringside An energetic
crowd of 9,237 at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas, Nevada, saw the return of “Sugar” Shane
Mosley (42-4, 36 KO’s) to the limelight as he scored a 10th
Round TKO victory over Fernando Vargas (25-3). Referee Joe Cortez elected to
stop the bout due to a massive swelling over Vargas’ left eye, which had
already forced his eye completely closed.
INSIDE THE GAME: MOSLEY-VARGAS, BARRERA,
LACY, PACQUIAO, COTTO AND MORE... by Jeff Mayweather
I have to wonder if Barrera has the urge to pursue a rematch with the
man who dominated and stopped him, Manny Pacquiao. I knew for a while that
Barrera was reluctant towards a second meeting with the Filipino brawler but
with the recent turn of events it wouldn’t surprise me to see Marco pursue
that fight. Either way I’d favor Pacquiao again.
VARGAS-MOSLEY: SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA IN THE HOUSE...
by David L. Ross
Bottom line—You’ve got to believe Vargas’ weight and back troubles may not
yet be behind him, which is why he enters the fight as a +160 dog...
I’ll lay the odds and take Mosley (-185) and the Over (10.5 rounds).
If you are able to do a parlay or combo,
Mosley/Decision may look good, but there’s really not that much value there.
You’d almost be better off putting 50 bucks on the draw at 17-1 and hoping
Vargas runs out of gas.
VARGAS - MOSLEY: THE DEFINITION OF A PICK 'EM...
by Chris Ackerman
I mentioned that no outcome would be particularly
shocking, but that’s not entirely true. If one bites the other’s ear,
I’ll be surprised. If a guy flies into the ring with a fan on his back,
I’ll be surprised. If Morgana the kissing bandit comes out of
retirement, I’ll be appalled…you get the idea. Should Vargas get the
win by KO or even decision, my reaction will probably be a subdued ‘How
do ya like that, Vargas won.’ If Shane gets the nod or the stoppage, a
shrug and ‘Well, Whaddya know,’ should cover it. When you’re
right 52% of the time, you’re wrong 48% of the time...
BROCK STOPS LAWRENCE!
...
by Mike Leanardi @ ringside After a sluggish, back and forth beginning to the fight, Calvin Brock
(28-0, 24KO's) landed a vicious left hook that floored Zuri Lawrence (20-11-4)
and caused referee Jay Nady to immediately stop the bout at 2:58 of the 6th
Round. Lawrence, apparently unconscious, remained on the canvas for a short
while and received immediate medical attention in the ring. Minutes
later, Lawrence did leave the ring under his own power.
In off-TV action
from Mandalay Bay... by Mike Leanardi @ ringside
In a Middleweight bout, Thomas Padron (2-2-2, 2 KO's) scored a 2nd
round TKO
victory over Deshawn Cohen (0-1).
In a 6 round Super Lightweight bout, Fernando Vargas' stablemate Daniel
Cervantes (9-0-1) remained undefeated as he won a unanimous decision over
Derrick Moon (11-11-1). Scores were 58-55, 58-55 and 57-56, Moon was down
once in the fourth.
In a Junior Middleweight bout, budding star Joel Julio,
(27-0, 24 KO's), saw his opponent,
Wilmer Mejia (11-11-1), retire after the second round.
FERNANDO VARGAS: A HUNGER FOR THE
LIMELIGHT... by Jeff Mayweather
The career of Fernando Vargas has had its share of vicissitudes. It has
been like a rollercoaster of sorts and it’s evident that he is still out
to make the remainder of his ride in the fight game memorable for all
the right reasons. Vargas faces off with always-dangerous Shane Mosley this Saturday night in Las Vegas and I don’t think I’d be out of line by
saying Fernando's career is on the line.
The date is February 25 - PPV over HBO - be sure to circle it in yellow
- as in caution light. Saccharine Shane Mosley versus Fraudulent
Fernando Vargas in a WBA junior middleweight eliminator...
Only good news is the word eliminator - that with luck, could result in
a majority draw verdict that maybe eliminates both from further
consideration - but then, maybe not.
FERNANDO VARGAS: 'I AM COMPLETE' ...
by Tom Dickey
The phrase heard repeatedly on Tuesday from Fernando Vargas at his Los
Angeles press conference was that he is now 'complete.' Vargas
reiterated over and over how he is now complete. The reason for this Vargas
epiphany was his reconciliation with his mother.
ON THE VARGAS vs MOSLEY 'SHOWDOWN' PAY PER VIEW
UNDERCARD.... The televised undercard of the
“Ferocious” Fernando Vargas and “Sugar” Shane Mosley “SHOWDOWN” will treat
boxing fans to two career-defining battles. WBO Bantamweight Champion Jhonny
Gonzalez defends his title against the legendary Mark “Too Sharp” Johnson, and
undefeated Calvin Brock puts his unblemished heavyweight record on the line
against Zuri Lawrence.
SHANE MOSLEY, OSCAR DE LA HOYA CONFERENCE CALL TRANSCRIPT
"Well, many
fighters know that when you have an opponent that is not a big name and it is
not a big championship fight it is sometimes difficult to get motivated – and
I’m sure Sugar Shane is motivated for every fight, but it’s not the same
training for a Fernando Vargas. The way he trains for this fight is just
different than the way he trained for his last fight. .."
