David Haye became the latest addition to Oscar De La Hoya's
Golden Boy stable and I for one couldn't be happier. This is a
great move for one of the most highly regarded heavyweights to
come out of Britain in recent times. Haye is sure to ignite
what many feel is a stagnant Heavyweight division with too
many fighters sitting comfortably, knowing that there is
little talent around to challenge their throne, but things are
about to change.
The "Hayemaker" started off plying his trade in the
Cruiserweight division but it has been a well documented fact
that he has been struggling to make the weight for a long time
now and, after unifying the division with the fight against
Maccarinelli, he decided it was time to make the step up.
Haye's fight against Maccarinelli along with his amazing
record of finishing 20 of his 21 fights within the
distance (and some not going much distance at all) proves that
he has the power to make it in the higher weight class and
with him comes a breath of fresh air that has long been
overdue in historically the most talked about division in
boxing.
The 27 year old is sure to be a fan's favourite with his
explosive power and with Hatton, Woods and Witter all losing
recently, the British fans would love to see him follow in the
footsteps of Frank Bruno and more recently Lennox Lewis in
wearing the Heavyweight gold. Having already called out
Wladimir Klitschko and with rumours that he is being lined up
to fight Hasim Rahman in his first contest it won't take long
before we find out what the Hayemaker is made of.
