Saturday night’s match-up between Felix Trinidad and Ricardo Mayorga was what fight fans needed to get after two weeks in which Oscar de la Hoya got stopped by a “body shot” from Bernard Hopkins and Roy Jones Jr. got “old” and beaten up by Glen Johnson in a one sided decision.

Felix 'Tito' Trinidad once uttered the above cited colloquial expression in reference to the ire stirred in his soul by Bernard Hopkins' disrespect of the Puerto Rican flag and of Tito himself. As we all know, Tito couldn't collect his dues from Hopkins, but two years later he found himself challenged again, this time by Ricardo Mayorga, who called out the devil in Trinidad many times over in the weeks preceding their much anticipated bout. On Saturday, October 2, 2004, the devil showed up, in rare form, and handed Ricardo Mayorga the beatdown of a lifetime.

Felix “Tito” Trinidad returned to the ring after being away for over two years. He could have taken the safe route, common for most fighters coming back from long layoffs or retirement. Instead, he chose one of the toughest men in boxing—the vicious, big punching, stone chinned, Ricardo Mayorga.

For a man who has been retired for two years, Saturday's performance is as brilliant as it gets! For a guy who is built a little awkwardly and does not have great natural balance, Felix Trinidad never fails to amaze me with the consistent results he achieves in the ring.

Tito Trinidad came back last night in a candidate for Fight of the Year.  Ricardo Mayorga lived up to his end of the bargain, but in the end the relentless and very accurate (63% connect percentage) would prove too much for the proud warrior from Nicaragua.

The fight started out at a blistering pace, much like that of Hagler vs Hearns. Mayorga came straight at Trinidad, throwing windmill, nonstop punches, trying to plant a seed in Tito's mind that coming back and fighting him was the biggest mistake of his life.  Unfortunately for Mayorga his macho act lit Tito's fire..
