DaVARRYLL WILLIAMSON CAPTURES THE NABF HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE

They say in boxing that you are only as good as your last fight, and if that holds true, then newly crowned North American Boxing Federation (NABF) Heavyweight Champion, DaVarryl ‘Touch of Sleep’ Williamson has a bright, bright future.  Williamson (20-2, 17 KOs) put on a boxing clinic in route to a majority decision over Elieser Castillo (26-4-2, 14 KOs). The 6’4” Williamson used fancy footwork, and a long hard jab to continually confuse Castillo who obviously expected Williamson    to come in and brawl with him. Scores were 113-113, 115-111, 115-111.

“We had a game plan, we stuck to it, and we had an easy night” said an excited Williamson. “Our team knew exactly what we were getting in Castillo, so we sat down, drew up a game plan, and here I am, the new NABF Champion, and I picked up the WBO Latin America Championship to boot. We didn’t even know we were eligible to hold that title.”  From the beginning it was apparent that Williamson was going to showcase more than just his vaunted right hand. Long hard jabs,  hard feints and clever footwork was the order of the night. Castillo never really seemed sure of himself, and continued to stalk Williamson around the ring for much of the fight, throwing one or two punches at a time.

Castillo’s best moment of the fight came in round eight when he trapped Williamson on the ropes and delivered a hard uppercut that wobbled Williamson. While Williamson did not go down, the referee felt that the blow was enough to warrant a standing-eight count. Williamson escaped the round, and came back out firing in the ninth.

A befuddled Castillo continued to stalk Williamson around the ring, taunting him and trying to entice Williamson into standing toe-to-toe, but Williamson saw no reason to change up his came plan. By the twelfth and final round, Castillo was so frustrated he stopped following Williamson, dropped his hands to his side and yelled at Williamson to engage him.

With the impressive display, Williamson captured the North American title, and the WBO Latin Americas Title, but most importantly put himself back in the midst of the heavyweight division. “I don’t see how I can’t be right back in the thick of things, Castillo was ranked in the Top 12 in most of the sanctioning bodies and I went into his backyard and took his title(s)  away from him.” stated Williamson. “With all that has happened in the last few weeks, I feel that I deserve to be mentioned in any conversation about the heavyweight division. I said it before, I will be the first of the “Night of the Young Heavyweights” to  win a major title.

For now, Williamson adds another impressive name to his resume and vaults back into the mix just six months after his  loss to ‘Baby’ Joe Mesi, a fight in which many claimed Williamson could never rebound from.
