Fight Fax records indicate that following a
positive test for a banned substance, the New York State Athletic Commission
has issued a 90-day suspension as well as a $10,000 fine to James Toney.
In addition, his bout against John Ruiz has been declared a 'No-Decision' and Toney will have to be re-tested at the end of the 90-day suspension, which is effective today. It is expected that the World Boxing Association will implement its Rule 18:23, which states:3. If the challenger wins the championship fight and his anti-drug test is positive and the losing champion has a negative result, then the champion shall retain his title in spite of the loss and the challenger shall be disqualified and shall not box for the title from the World Boxing Association during the next two (2) years and only after presentation of medical evidence that he has been rehabilitated. An angry James Toney issued the following statement through his promoter Goossen Tutor... "Being accused of taking performance enhancing substances is an insult to me. I don't do drugs period. I've never used any illegal substances to prepare myself for a fight."
