REMEMBERING TITO: A LOOK BACK... by Chris Robinson
Despite rooting for both fighters I found it very hard to watch Trinidad
go out that way. It’s not very pleasant watching a fighter lose in such
fashion when he has given us so many highs over the years.
WINKY WRIGHT: FINALLY ARRIVED!... by Jeff Mayweather
Saturday night was supposed to be a big fight; instead it became a
glorified sparring session. Winky Wright gave Trinidad a boxing lesson.
It was Boxing 101 from round one until round twelve. Trinidad had no
answer whatsoever to what was in front of him fight night. He was badly
beaten to the punch over and over again, and the jab controlled the
fight throughout.
NOTHING BUT WINKY RIGHTS ALL NIGHT... Sharkie's Machine by Frank
Gonzalez Jr.
Winky looked relaxed and Tito was sporting a new
hairstyle. Both looked supremely confident as they made their way into
the ring at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas Saturday night. In the battle
between power and finesse, southpaw vs. conventional, boxer vs. puncher,
Winky’s finesse found a way of turn Tito’s power into ineptitude.
TITO SHOULD HAVE STAYED RETIRED... by Elisa Harrison
Bernard Hopkins made the invincible Tito look human; Winky
Wright made him look pitiful.
SPARE THE (TITO) TAPS - IT AIN'T OVER 'TIL IT'S OVER...
by George Elsasser
Yes, my choice was Trinidad, had even gone the Tito early or late
route - not because of his return to action destruction of Mayorga
that was pretty much preordained - but rather, the way he had got off
them explosive combinations.
WINKY WRIGHT NOW A PAY PER VIEW FIGHTER...
NOT LIKELY!... by Darren Yates I’ll be the first to admit
that I picked Trinidad to beat Winky Wright; hoping was more my frame of
mind. I didn’t expect Trinidad to be beaten so easily, but it should not
be a big surprise to students of the game. Congratulations to Ronald
“Winky” Wright for working out a winning strategy and sticking to it.
Commiserations to the boxing fan expecting to receive some entertainment
value for his dollar.
WHO IN THEIR WRIGHT MIND WOULD WANT TO
FIGHT WINKY NOW?... by Tom Dickey
Before Winky Wright defeated Shane Mosley, he was known as a solid fighter
no one really wanted to face. Kind of like the Chris Byrd of the
middleweights,
a guy who is hard to look good against. On Saturday night, he
proved this notion
true again. After dominating a solid big name fighter in
Felix Trinidad, the
question arises again; who wants to fight Winky Wright?
WRIGHT JAB WINS THE FIGHT... by Kenny Perrault
Winky Wright set the pace of the fight in the first ten seconds. That pace was to
jab, jab, and jab some more. The jab is the most effective punch in any
fighter's arsenal but when was the last time a jab alone beat a great fighter
like Felix Trinidad?
WINKY WHIPS FRUSTRATED FELIX... by Jim Amato
Winky Wright made it look easy and in the end it was all
quite boring. The only thing that held my interest was waiting for Felix
Trinidad to land the punch that would pull out a victory. That blow never
landed.
ZAB ZAPS COSME RIVERA; GRIGSBY IS A CHAMP AGAIN... by Jim
Amato
Zab Judah may have been looking ahead to a possible match with Oscar De
La Hoya in September but he sure took care of business last night. In one
of his best career performances Zab destroyed Cosme Rivera in the third
round.
From the opening round it seemed as if Wright had the fight under
control. It was a continuous pop-pop of the Wright right jab that kept
Trinidad at a distance he couldn’t handle. Through the fight you heard
Papa Trinidad (“Tito’s” trainer and dad), pleading with his son to get
closer so he can get punches off, but the dominating Winky jab kept
Trinidad at bay.
TRINIDAD - WRIGHT: POST FIGHT QUOTES... WRIGHT: I moved up to middleweight. He is a great fighter and he’s
strong. I hit him with some great shots. He has a great hook.
I kept moving to avoid the hook. I take my hat off to him. He
has a heart of a champion. I’ll exercise the rematch clause.
That was tonight. Next time may be different." TRINIDAD: I came in at the best condition ever and I couldn’t land
any power punches because I was being cautious in not losing any points.
I am not thinking about retirement."
JERMAIN TAYLOR ANALYZES TRINIDAD-WRIGHT
"Trinidad is going to be the aggressor
and Winky is going to be the boxer. As far as who’s going to win the fight,
I can’t call it. They’re both good fighters, and in boxing, I believe
anything can happen..."
COTTO BREAKS DOWN TRINIDAD vs WRIGHT!
Preparing for
his Madison Square Garden debut, undefeated WBO jr. welterweight champion
MIGUEL COTTO took a few minutes from his camp in Puerto Rico, where he
is training for his June 11 title defense and offered the following analysis on
the middleweight showdown...
TRINIDAD v WRIGHT: MIDDLEWEIGHT EXPOSURE...
by Xavier 'El Mago' Cepeda
Tito will enter the early rounds aggressively, searching
and
pressing for an opening. Wright
has never been in with a pressure
fighter, with the punching accuracy that
Trinidad possesses.
Ordinarily, Wright likes
to take fights the distance.
That will not be the case on Saturday.
WINKY-TITO: A CLASSIC BOXER vs PUNCHER MATCH-UP... by
Tom Dickey
On one hand you have Tito Trinidad, who has made a good living proving
that the puncher can beat the boxer. On the other hand you have Winky Wright,
who has made a good living proving that the boxer can beat anybody. On
Saturday this will get put to the test again.
WINKY FINALLY HAS HIS SHOT... by David Kolb
“While many boxers avoid tough fights, Tito Trinidad always wants to
fight the
best,”
King said. “Tito has proven yet again he has the
heart of a lion by
agreeing to
face the great world champion Winky Wright.”
TRINIDAD-WRIGHT: A REAL SHOWDOWN...
by Mike Leanardi
Felix "Tito" Trinidad (42-1, 35 KO's) enters the fight as a sizeable betting
favorite despite his inactivity, having fought just one time in the last
three years due to an early retirement, and is the better known fighter. In
fact, Trinidad is the fan favorite and the box office draw.
ZAB JUDAH MEETS THE PRESS...
I’ve come full circle since the Kostya Tszyu fight here in November of 2001.
This is the first time I have been in this arena [MGM Grand Garden Arena] since
that night. I am finally going to put this behind me and show the world
that I will continue to be the undisputed welterweight champion of the world.”
WHY WINKY WON'T TOP TITO... by Jim Amato
Winky has many assets like his strength, stamina, boxing
ability, chin and most of all, heart. Still even with all these
attributes Winky lacks the one thing that will prevent him from winning.
The big punch.
TRINIDAD EARLY OR LATE... by George Elsasser
Feeling here is Wright has received more than his due with the wins over a
faded, chemically, iron-pumped and blown up welter in Mosley. Thus, he could
pretty much remain in the trenches with a good defense-counterpunch style while
facing what appeared a faded opponent.
JUDAH FINALLY ANNOUNCES RIVERA FIGHT:
SCHEDULED ON TRINIDAD-WRIGHT UNDERCARD... by David Kolb
Undisputed world welterweight champion Zab "Super" Judah 33-2 (24),
announced on a national conference call that he will be making a mandatory IBF
defense of his title against Cosme Rivera on the Winky Wright vs. Tito Trinidad
undercard in Las Vegas at the MGM Grand on May 14. The two fights will be
broadcast live on HBO PPV.
JUDAH: IF ANYONE WANTS ANYTHING AT 147,
THEY GOTTA COME SEE ME...
by Tom Dickey
I've grown a lot since losing to Kostya Tszyu. I've had
attitude adjustments. I'm 27years old now and I feel older and wiser. I've been learning more and more each
day through new
experiences. I value my life more now, I take things more seriously. I guess I
have settled down a little
more since I'm married with children.
COSME RIVERA VOWS TO UPSET JUDAH
“All of those boxing insiders
who think this is going to be a one-sided fight haven’t followed my career,”
Rivera said. “I can’t wait. Judah is wearing my belts. He’s never fought
anybody with my heart and determination. I’m a Mexican and we’re all about
heart. Nobody’s every knocked me down. I’ve been waiting my whole career for
this opportunity. I’m going to bring the fight to him.”
ZAB 'SUPER' JUDAH TO FACE COSME RIVERA ON
MAY 14
Trinidad vs. Wright Mega-Fight Becomes Mega-Card with the Addition of
Undisputed World Welterweight Champion Judah... Undisputed world welterweight champion Zab “Super”
Judah will meet his International Boxing Federation mandatory challenger Cosme
Rivera in a world championship co-feature as part of the Felix “Tito” Trinidad
vs. Winky Wright card set for May 14 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena live on HBO
Pay-Per-View.
WRIGHT MAN FOR THE JOB...
by Jeff Mayweather
One of the most intriguing fights on the dais this year is the upcoming Felix "Tito"
Trinidad vs Ronald "Winky" Wright encounter. The May 14th match-up is really a pick'em
fight. Tito is a huge fan favorite as well as one of the best punchers in all of boxing at any
weight. Trinidad puts it on the line each and every time out, never will you
be disappointed with a Trinidad fight, he gives his all until the final bell.
Trinidad has been in one stinker his entire career and it wasn't his fault, we
have Oscar de la Hoya to blamefor that...
