An old school throw down in Yonkers last night showed
promise for a
few greenhorns while unveiling a paper tiger.
Here's a fight by fight summary of what went down...
Bout #1 /
MICHAEL BROOKS
(Long Island, debut) vs
JAMEL BROWN
(Bronx, debut). Brooks
is stronger and a bit more poised than Brown. Each fighter
trades hard shots early as Brown visibly begins to fade.
With :10 left in the 4th round, the ref stops the fight due
to Brown's exhaustion.
WINNER BROOKS / RSC 4
Bout #2 /
TAKESHI SATO
(Manhattan, debut) vs
Angel Torres
(Yonkers, 1-4-1). Torres
comes out crisp and rocks Sato plenty early on countering
Satos in-your-face aggression. Torres suffers a gash over
his right eye in round 2 but continues to out stick and
outgun "the Japanese Bomber." Exemplifying his 1-4-1
record, Torres nearly collapses in round 4 from exhaustion.
Fortunately for him however, Sato can't break an egg.
WINNER UD TORRES
Bout #3 /
EUSEBIO FLORES
(Brooklyn, 1-1) vs
LAMBROS KARAOLIDES
(3-0). Each
fighter wails away for two rounds with Karaolides being
noticeably stronger. :41 seconds into round 3 Flores
gets crushed by a Karaolides left hook and the fight is over.
WINNER by KO
KARAOLIDES
Bout #4 /
ISSOUF KINDA (Harlem,
5-0) vs MELCHOR
GUILLEN, Jr (Newark,
2-3). Not much more here outside of a Boxing lesson
granted by Kinda, every minute, each round.
WINNER UD KINDA
Bout #5 / JOSE
RIVERA (New
Rochelle, NY 1-0) vs RAUL
LOPEZ (Bronx, 1-0). The
best fight of the night. Lopez has a 2' reach advantage
over the aggressive Rivera. Lopez is a slick boxer yet,
Rivera does nicely closing the distance to land long,
powerful hooks. Lopez keeps his power as he backs up.
Rivera has his moments snapping back Lopez' head. Rivera is
stronger. The crowd is on their feet in round 4. Round 6
is the best round of the fight with Lopez nearly knocking
out Rivera at the :20 mark and finishing strong. Lopez
needed that round.
MD DRAW
Bout #6 / FASIKA
BEZABEH (Manhattan, 0-2) vs
SHQUPRIM MURIQI
(Yonkers, 1-0). Miriqi
wins via an early, ridiculous stoppage by the referee
(obviously, a little hometown cookin').
WINNER by KO MURIQI
Bout #7 /
ADAM KOWNACKI
(Brooklyn, debut) vs
CAROSSEE AUPONTE
(Philadelphia, 0-2-1); Another
early stoppage by the referee due to Auponte turning his
back. Evidently, Kownacki's trainer was told by the ref
afterwards that "he knew what Kownacki could do to the guy,
so he had to stop it." Nice.
WINNER by KO KOWNACKI
Bout #8 /
EDDIE IRIZARRY
(Bronx, 7-1) vs
JOEY ARROYO
(Bronx, 2-1-1); Irizarry
drops Arroyo 0:10 into the 1st round and chases him
throughout. :30 left in round one, Arroyo pays back the
favor by dropping Irizarry to his knee with a shot to the
forehead. Arroyo hurts Irizarry with a straight right to
the chest that nearly drops him and weakens him for what
seems the rest of the fight. Arroyo showboats. Irizarry is
clearly a stronger fighter, yet, looks sluggish from
Arroyo's speed and craftiness.
WINNER UD ARROYO
Bout #9 /
ALEXIS MEJIAS
(Bronx, 10-1) vs
JOSH HARRIS
(Youngstown, 3-3); I
had a talk with JASON ESTRADA before this fight and he told
me that his dad (Harris' trainer) finally had Harris' head
right for this fight. He said that although his man Josh
was an underdog with a journeyman's record, he was "ready."
So, when the bell rung for round #1 - out came Mejias with a
smooth peek-a-boo style. In the opening seconds he looked
much nicer, smoother than the clumsy southpaw Harris. :30
into round 1, Harris jumps in with a tight right hook that
drops the 233 lb giant Mejias like a ROCK! Mejias somehow
beats the count and climbs to his feet. Still shaky, Mejias
gets clubbed once more by a wide, looping right-hook and
this time he is down and out for good.
WINNER 1:40 of ROUND 1, by
KO HARRIS
