12 rounds - FELIX TRINIDAD, Cupey Alto, PR, 42-2, 170 lbs vs ROY JONES
JR., Pensacola, FL /51-4, 169 lbs
Round
1 - Very cautious first half of the round. Tito jabbing, Roy moving. Long rights from
Roy with little on them. Both men miss trying to find their range. Roy waits with his
right hand out, while Tito lands a few body shots that make the crowd come
alive. 1-2 lands by
Roy, who lunges in with a left hook. Tito lands a right, Roy doubles up on his hook
and shuffles at the bell.
TITO
Round
2 - Roy's arms are out, open wide. Tito lands another body shot, Roy
doubles up his hook to Tito's head; another left hook to Roy's body, and
another. Tito is outworking Roy. He lands another jab. Roy hooks to the body and
head. Tito lands a 1-2 and two body shots. Roy is getting beaten to
the punch and covering up too much to win the round. A long right lands and Roy
comes on strong at the bell but still got out pointed, he didn't do enough to win the round.
TITO
Round 3
- Tito fires a quick double jab and overhand right which land. Roy
lunges in with a left hook; they trade jabs and Roy begins to work his jab
more. Roy lunges in with another right and misses. Tito lunges in with a hook and
Roy catches him with a right, then another. Tito backs Roy into the corner and
flurries. Roy pounds his belly, saying, 'Bring it on!' He shuffles and waves
Trinidad
on. Roy taunts Tito, showboating and screaming for Tito to bring it. They exchange hard
at the bell
ROY
Round 4
- Tito comes out compact, with his hands held up high. He remains busy with
straight hard shots to the head and body, yet mostly hitting gloves. Roy jabs and
backs up to the ropes. Roy catches Tito with a right and taunts him on the
ropes. Tito then catches Roy with a hard straight right. Roy shakes his butt but still
offers very little by way of punches and with a minute left is looking to lose
another round. Roy triples up on his left hook then doubles it. Tito lands a
right, although neither fighter is sustaining any sort of power in any punch thus nobody
is taking clear control - but Tito is staying busier and landing more.
TITO
Round 5
- For fifteen seconds they stare at each other. Tito steps in with two hooks to the
body, (TITO! TITO! chants become louder)/followed by a chorus of ROY! ROY! chants. Tito lands a low
blow and Roy shakes his butt to the crowd. Roy stalks Tito with high hands and
continues to be outworked by Tito's straight shots and hooks to the body. Now
it's USA
chants. Tito keeps hustling and wins the round on my card by staying busy.
TITO
Round 6
- Perhaps Roy is landing the cleaner shots yet Tito is simply landing more. LET'S
GO TITO! chants are heard in the arena. Tito drives Roy to the ropes with jabs.
Roy comes out with a long hook, then lands a hard right that rocks Tito, then backs up and lets him off the hook.
Jones looks the bigger of
the two, but has yet to establish any dominance. Roy taunts and flurries Tito
before hitting him with a hard hook. Roy's hand speed comes into play now and he
wipes the dust off the sole of his boxing shoes after the round.
ROY
Round 7
- Roy steps in with a lead left uppercut that hits gloves. He backs into the
corner and eats body shots before firing hard and dropping Tito. He throws
another left uppercut and starts swinging for the fences before Tito gets up and
does a nice job of surviving. Roy stalks and picks shots until the bell rings to
end this round.
ROY (10-8)
Round 8
- Tito is backpedaling and looking a little lethargic as Roy stalks and
with hands high continues to get outworked. One minute remains in the round and a left uppercut and
right tries to steal the round for Roy, who rocks Trinidad with another left hook.
However, Tito may have won the round on some cards by being the busier of the
two, not much landed by
either guy outside of Roy driving Trinidad to the ropes a time or two with body
shots. Roy's power shots stole the round on my unofficial scorecard.
ROY
Round 9
- More of the same until Roy
lands a hard left uppercut, driving
Tito to the ropes. The crowd senses that Roy is stronger as he stalks Tito around
the ring and blocks shots from him with high hands. At the bell Roy lands
another hard head shot and winds up for a signature left hook.
ROY
Round 10
- Roy drops his left and starts landing hard hooks and quick jabs from the
waist; another left hook lands from Roy, answered by a
Tito
left hook and another
overhand right followed by hard body shots, before Roy comes back with two hard
rights. A lead right lands by Roy, he drops his hands and backs to the ropes -
waiting; another 1-2 lands and Tito falls again! Roy tries to finish the show -
flurries hard at the bell but Trinidad survives.
ROY (10-8)
Round 11
- Roy comes forward with hard jabs while Tito hits gloves jabbing in
retreat. Roy seems to be deflecting all of Tito's punches with his high hands. Roy
no longer respects Tito's power at this point and it shows by his constant
taunting. Roy is in total control. ROY JONES JUNIOR chants are heard. Roy misses hard hooks to the
head and wins the round on sheer strength.
ROY
Round 12
- Roy comes out shooting fast jabs at Tito. Quick left uppercuts land and Tito
stands in front of his opponent looking for something to land. Roy jumps in with a right uppercut
and rocks Tito. Roy counters and doubles and triples up on his right hand before
lunging in with another long left uppercut at the bell.
ROY
ROY JONES, JR. wins a unanimous decision
116-110, 117-109, 116-110.
