HEAVYWEIGHT UNIFICATION” Wladimir Klitschko vs Ibragimov

Heavyweight Championship Madison Square Garden

Undercard Fights

(1)

MONYETTE FLOWERS/Memphis, TN 4-8-1 (2) vs RONNIE VARGAS/NYC, 5-0 (4) // 4 rounds - jr Middleweights

1/ The taller Vargas is using his reach nicely for the first :30. Flowers begins to land sporadically with overhand rights and hooks to the body before absorbing a flurry of tight hooks from Vargas, who keeps his distance while backpedaling and catching Flowers coming in, by the end of the round Flowers' hands are HIGH and he's thinking defense.  VARGAS

2/  Vargas is landing 2 to 1 on the ever aggressive Flowers, Vargas is poised and relaxed jabbing, loading up with long outside shots that find their mark, Flowers is tough and durable but begins to feel Vargas' power shots at the end of the round narrowly missing an 8 count by the bell.  VARGAS

3/ Vargas picks it back up as he's beginning to sit down on his punches more, he lands with hard uppercuts from the outside. Flowers keeps coming wailing away, Flowers holds Vargas in the corner at the end of the round and does his best work landing a few tight hooks and an overhand right but still loses the round.  VARGAS

4/ Right hand lead lands by Vargas - 3 of them, nice body work by Flowers before Vargas can get back on the outside, Flowers lands a long right that echoes through the building before Vargas cranks a tight left hook that knocks out his mouthpiece, flowers stalks, Vargas jabs for the remainder of the round. VARGAS

*WINNER VARGAS UD*

--Valiant effort by Flowers, Nice Boxing by the undefeated prospect Vargas--

 (2)

EARL LADSON/Winston-Salem, NC 13-11-1 (7) vs ALEXANDER USTINOV/Belarus, 7-0 (7) // 4 rounds - Heavyweight

1/  Ladson comes out tripling up on his jab to Ustinov's body. Ustinov is much taller.  Poised and relaxed, he drops Ladson with a straight right as he comes in LOW trying to jab to his body, seconds later another straight right drops Ladson again, for some reason Ladson gets up and in the ensuing few seconds reflects a tremendous display of "heart problems" - turning his back on the taller, stronger Ustinov. Eddie Cotton shows mercy on Ladson and calls a halt to the carnage late in the first round as Ladson is coiled up in the corner looking helpless.

*WINNER K0 rd1 USTINOV  ~ Official time: 1:59" ~

--Ustinov may have potential yet it is entirely impossible to determine his worth after tonight's opposition--

 (3)

THOMAS BROWN/York, SC,  12-3-1 (7)  vs  PETER QUILLIN/NYC, 15-0 (12) // 6 rounds -
Super Middleweight

1/ Quillin is taller than the solid Brown, double jab from brown to Quillin's body, Quillin is taller and leaner but fighting stronger as he stalks Brown, Brown shows little respect for Quillin's high KO percentage and chooses to trade with him some. Quillin is beating him to the punch though Brown looks like he came to fight.  QUILLIN

2/ Brown is quick and throws quick 3 punch combinations yet they are separated by 15 seconds of inactiveness, this may be from being out of shape - just as I typed this Quillin shifts and throws a solid left hook to Brown's body. Brown doubles up in FETAL position and stays down for the count.

'*WINNER KO rd2 QUILLIN - Official time 1:32*

--Quillin is a heavy handed fighter who I've seen fight numerous times here in NYC.  Though he currently fights out of NY, he originally hails from Grand Rapids, MI - the same town as Floyd Mayweather.  Quillin has walked through everyone I've witnessed him fight thus far and it would be interesting to see how he would handle the same kind of POWER against an A class fighter.  In conversation he seems like a nice guy --

 (4)

 IMAMU MAYFIELD/Perth Amboy, NJ  25-8-2 (18)  vs  JONATHAN BANKS/Dertroit, MI, 18-0 (13) // 10 rounds - Cruiserweight

1/  Seconds into the first round Banks lunges in with a long overhand right that lands flush sending Mayfield to the canvas. Mayfield beats the count and gets up wobbly but ready to fight. Banks is quicker and noticeably younger; Mayfield looks his age and shows that he's still got the heart to keep fighting as he struggles to match Banks' speed and power, :20 after the first knockdown Banks steps in with a jab followed by another overhand right which doesn't even seem to land flush (upon viewing the replay) as it just grazed his head yet, Mayfield is down again.  Mayfield laid stretched out on the canvas for a good :15 seconds staring at the ceiling - not hurt, but perhaps pondering his long career and SHORT future in Boxing. (He has lost 5 of his last 6 fights, 1 by unanimous decision, the other 4 by TKO or KO).

*WINNER KO rd1 BANKS - Official time 1:49*
--This fight I believe was a non-risk, well planned step for Banks.  Mayfield is an experienced former world champion, yet, not quite that durable anymore.  I've been on Banks' wave for about 2 years since witnessing him show boatloads of heart one night at the Hammerstein Ballroom.  Eliseo Castillo decked him 2 times in the first round (in a fight that Banks was supposed to lose) before he roared back to earn a KO of his own a few rounds later--

(5)

FRANSISCO MORA/Argentina,  52-12 (35)  vs  JOE GREEN/Queens, NY, 17-0 (13) // 12 rounds -
WBO/NABO-NABA Middleweight
Championship

1/  Green keeps his distance from the awkward Mora, straight left wobbles Mora, right hook lands slush for Green, who seems very polished as he plays keep away far enough to land an uppercut from outside. Mora is lunging with his punches and seemingly is off balance throughout the round, Green moves in with power shots,. more towards the end of the round and already begins to take control as he may have made it through the round without being hit at all.  GREEN

2/ Long outside hooks from Mora seem to be his mindset, Green is calm and controlled through the beginning of the round as Mora is wide and wailing, suddenly a strong straight left to Mora's chest lands for Green, dropping Mora in his corner. he gets up and stumbles around the ring attempting to fight on without any threat to Green.  GREEN

3/  Mora is all arm punches, Green rips combinations off his head and body, Mora lumbers in with his head moving side to side but Green still finds a way to attack an opening, Mora lunges off the ropes hoping to land a big shot, Green keeps his distance and begins to pick his shots at the ever moving Mora who has fallen into an offense that's almost entirely composed of a defensive mindset.  GREEN

4/  Mora is not coming forward so much now yet, as he does he's snapped to the canvas by a short tight right hook by Green -standing 8- immediately afterwards Green lands a questionable low blow and Mora (wisely) takes some time to recover. Green is loading up with every shot now and Mora begins to reel, Mora is dropped by a body shot as he attempts to call the shot LOW - the ref ain't having it.  GREEN

5/  By now Mora is holding his hands noticeably higher straight in front of his face and Green begins to HOOK around them, Mora is a tough Argentinean who just won't go away, no matter the power shots he endures. Green is now loading up with every shot from the outside and landing the majority of them, Mora's offense is almost pointless as Green shows no respect for it and does what he pleases with power shots.  GREEN

6/  Mora's movement is being tied by Green now as he seems to be getting faster. Green does a nice job of catching Mora coming in and quickly moving away without being hit. Each time Mora backs off Green,  he lands hard power shots from the outside, :30 left in the round and Green lands a vicious right hook to Mora's body and the ref offers another standing 8. Green makes Mora miss plenty as he finishes the round sticking his jab in his face.  GREEN

7/  Another quick hook floors Mora and the ref mercifully calls it a slip, more jabbing from Green. Mora lands a quick double jab which is followed immediately by a quick 4 punch combo by Green, Green begins to triple up on his hooks and jabs - landing everything, jabbing by Green, jabbing, jabbing and when Mora steps forward he HOOKS him and spins away, much of the same all round in this VERY non-competitive fight.  GREEN

8/  Green makes motions for Mora to come forward with something different but to no avail. Long uppercuts and quick hooks by Green steal the show and dominate the action. The ref stops the action to look at Mora's bruises, Mora's corner should seriously consider stopping the fight as the doctor pays him a visit in between rounds.  GREEN

9/Green batters Mora from corner to corner in the first minute, Mora shows glimpses of someone who either wants to win or someone who truly "wanted" to win at some point - and maybe even did win some fights - but those days are long gone from tonight. Green is looking sharp landing 3 and 4 punch combinations at will  GREEN

10/Basically more of the same this round until Mora sits on his stool and refuses to answer the bell for the 11th. GREEN wins the NABA middleweight title and the WBO/NABO middleweight title.

*WINNER TKO/11 - GREEN*

--I must admit that even though it took some time for Joe Green to take the fight completely out of Francisco Mora, I was impressed with his performance.  Joe Green looked almost flawless and is certainly a solid undefeated Middleweight contender.

*Any true Boxing fan will tell you how difficult it is to keep an Argentinean sitting on his stool during a fight -

   - Just ask Vernon Forrest & Floyd Mayweather, Jr. about their exploits with Baldomir--
