So Arturo Gatti is dead. According to the latest
reports, Gatti was found strangled and with a knife
wound to the back of his head. So far the only suspect is his 23-year old
"SCORES" stripper wife AMANDA RODRIGUES & the only witness is their 10-month old
son who was in the apartment with them. As details emerge we get a glimpse of a
violent yet, common lifestyle of yet another once great Boxing Champion.
So it goes, another pugilist who weathered an array of wars inside the ring ~
only to be slain at the hands of life's suffering on the outside. It's very
likely that in this particular murder, Gatti's young fireplug stripping
wife did not truly fathom the overall impact that her husband had in
our sport. (How many 23-year old females actually know this stuff?)
There are a few possible reasons explaining just why a fighter's legacy is more
often than not "tainted" upon hanging up the gloves. Hey, these are
strictly observations from a boxing trainer and in no way scientific. The primary
research behind my hypothesis' stems from what's been observed in my 25+ years
in the sport and my own thoughts as to why this happened to Gatti.
1// THE FIGHT INSIDE
Aggression, Sacrifice, Discipline, Isolation, Fear, Ego & Pain are certainly
not selling points to embellish the Sweet Science. Nonetheless, the 7 words
above encompass every week of a fighter's journey toward life inside the ring. It
is often difficult to turn the faucet of these overpowering emotions
off when
lumbering from the fight game and into the ordinary world. In many cases it is
impossible.
2// EARLY RETIREMENT SPIRAL
Arturo Gatti was 37 years old when he died - two years after Alphonso Gomez forced him
into stashing his workout gear in a sack in the basement. Mind you, at 35 -
when most ordinary folks are striding through the pinnacle of their careers,
Gatti was an old, worn-out boxer who had to find something else to do. So, here
is a guy with no education ~ not skilled at any particular trade outside of a
boxing gym ~ and thus, without any means to make anymore money to purchase pretty
things for his sexy-stripper wife.
How amiable could things have been in the Gatti household?
3// STRIPPERS LAMENT
The definition of lament is described when grief is felt over the event
itself. Granted I don't know anything about Amanda Rodrigues
outside of the fact that she was Arturo's wife and she stripped for a living.
Unfortunately, however, I do know a thing or two about strippers. Some enjoy
their trade and relish in the attention of groping old men, who get their rocks
off in front of them while many dilute and sacrifice their self-esteem only for
the cash.
How harmonious could it have been to live with this chick?
