4 Rounds
Gerardo Prieto - 147 lbs. - Provo, Utah 6-7-1(0) vs Tommy Rainone-148 lbs. -
Long Island, NY -11-3 (3 KOs).
Prieto pursues and swings wildly through all of round 1. Southpaw Rainone
drops him with a straight left in round 2. The fight turned painfully
sloppy, full of take-downs, headlocks and taunts. No knockout - but the
crowd loved it somehow.
WINNER: TOMMY RAINONE, Unanimous decision.
4 Rounds
Markas Gonzales - 172 lbs. - Kansas City, MO - 7-2 (4 KOs) vs Will
Rosinsky - 173 lbs. - Brooklyn, NY 9-0 (6 KOs).
Undefeated Rosinsky had his hands full with the ever charging, busy style of
Gonzalez. Gonzalez showed plenty of spirit but ran into far too many clean
shots to win the bout.
WINNER: WILL ROSINSKY, Unanimous decision. 40-35 (twice) 40-36.
4 Rounds
Tommy Atencio - 127 lbs. - Denver, CO - 4-3 (2 KOs) vs Jorge Diaz - 126 lbs.
- Jersey City, NJ, 11-0 (7 KOs).
:30 into round 1 Diaz catches Atencio square on the chin with an overhand
right. Atencio's head spins backwards and he falls to the canvas. He beats
the count, gets up and amidst a hail of bombs by Diaz, Atencio twists his
ankle and falls hard back on the ground. He doesn't get up.
WINNER: JORGE DIAZ, KO 1:27 Round 2.
6 Rounds
Garrett Wilson - 178 lbs.- Philadelphia, PA - 7-2 (2 KOs) vs Carlos Negron -
181lbs. - San Juan, PR, 6-0 (5 KOs).
Long and rangy Negron displayed his Olympic pedigree by clearly out pointing
& out sticking the much shorter, less developed Wilson.
Wilson resembled fellow Philly fighter Joe Frazier minus the power. By
round 4 Wilson's face & nose were bleeding badly. Although he showed Philly
toughness, Negron clearly was the better boxer throughout.
WINNER: CARLOS NEGRON, Unanimous decision, 60-54 all.
8 Rounds
Ishmail Arvin - 154 lbs., Baltimore -15-1-4 (7 KOs) vs Pawel Wolak - 154
lbs. - New Jersey - 25-1 (17 KOs).
This was a toe to toe slugfest from round 1. Wolak landed cleaner, harder
shots down the stretch while continually absorbing Arvin's flurries. Each
guy rallied throughout the fight yet neither seemed to pull away from the
other. A large majority of the fight took place in the center of the ring
with each fighter refusing to give ground. Although Arvin had only won 2 of
his last 6 fights, he fought like a champion.
WINNER: PAWEL WOLAK Unanimous decision, 80-72, 79-73 twice.
10 Rounds
Juan Astorga - 159 lbs., Missouri - 14-3-1 (9 KOs) vs John Duddy -160 lbs.
-NYC - 27-1 (17 KOs).
Unless the fighter is from St. Louis, if they hail from anywhere else in the
Midwest an asterisk should go by their name. This said, in 1:55 of round 1,
Duddy disposed of Astorga with a body shot.
WINNER: JOHN DUDDY, KO 1:55, round 1.
12 Rounds
Rogers Mtagwa -122-1/2 lbs., Philadelphia, PA, 26-13-2, 18 KOs vs Yuriorkis
Gamboa -126 lbs., Miami, FL 16-0 (14 KOs)
After a series of thuds hammered into the crowd from Mtagwa's head, Gamboa
finally dropped him with one at the end of round 1. 0:30 into round 2 the
question was, "how much punishment can Mtagwa sustain?" 2:35 into round 2
we get the answer as Steve Smoger steps in to rescue Mtagwa from the
onslaught of thuds.
WINNER: YURIORKIS GAMBOA, KO 2:35 round 2.
12 Rounds (WBO Featherweight title)
Steve Luevano - 126 lbs., La Puente, CA, 37-1-1 (15 KOs) vs Juan Manuel
Lopez, 125 lbs., Caguas, PR, 27-0 (24 KOs)
Two southpaws, each seem to be mirror image of the other, with Lopez being
stronger. Luevano's left cheek is bright red after round 3, his eye quite
swollen as well. Lopez is beginning to bully him as the fight progresses.
The maneuvers gunned out by each fighter in round 4 showed why they are
champions. Lopez is clearly stronger and continues chopping away through
round 5. Luevano's lack of firepower is outweighing his skills as a boxer
at this point. Luevano reels. Finally a straight left by the southpaw
Lopez nails Luevano straight in the face. Luevano gamely climbs to his feet
but sways enough for referee Benjy Esteves Jr. to rescue him early on
in round 7.
WINNER: JUAN MANUEL LOPEZ, KO 0:44 round 7.
