A few notes from last night's DiBella's BROADWAY BOXING fight card from Manhattan:

JUNIOR LIGHTWEIGHTS / 4 ROUNDS /

Washington Hago, Woodside, NY 1-1 (1) vs Cliff Walker, Denver, CO 0-3-1

1/ Walker comes out switching up -back and forth, orthodox to southpaw- which confuses more people than just his opponent.  Hago catches him with a straight right when Walker's  back hits the ropes. Walker kneels - takes an 8 count - gets rocked again and is rescued by the referee midway through the 1st round.

*HAGO wins 1st round TKO

SUPER MIDDLEWEIGHTS / 4 ROUNDS /

Juan Cabrera, NYC, NY 2-0 (1) vs Anthony Hunter, Brooklyn, NY 0-1

1/Cabrera comes out throwing crisp combinations and immediately lands big shots to Hunter's head.  Cabrera keeps Hunter off balance for much of the round.  Not much from Hunter in the opening round regarding style outside of a few wild looping shots from left field that somehow find their mark.  CABRERA

2/Composure, or lack thereof, becomes the ultimate unveiler  in this round as Cabrera establishes his dominance with tight power shots throughout.  Hunter is rocked numerous times.  CABRERA

3/A quick 1-2-3 combination by Cabrera lands beginning round 3.  Hunter's corner quickly comes to his rescue  :20 into the round.

*CABRERA wins 3rd round TKO

SUPER MIDDLEWEIGHTS / 8 ROUNDS/

Curtis Stevens, Brooklyn, NY  10-0 (9) vs Jose Spearman, Columbus, OH  24-9-4 (10)

1/ Neither fighter takes the initiative for the first 90 seconds of the round before Stevens unleashes a monstrous left hook rocking Spearman.  Spearman is on shaky legs and reels for about a minute until composing himself and coming back at the end to land some pretty good shots.  He may have stolen the round on a few cards but not mine.  STEVENS

2/ Big right by Spearman opens the round, yet Stevens is clearly busier at the outset.  Both fighters land big shots.  Spearman is showing success landing clean solid shots from the outside as he utilizes his reach advantage.  In a round that Spearman seems to be winning, he is CRUSHED by a left hook to the temple and counted out with only seconds to go.

*STEVENS wins 2nd round KO

HEAVYWEIGHTS / 10 ROUNDS /

Fres Oquendo, Chicago, IL  24-3 (15) vs Daniel Bispo, Sao Paolo, BRAZIL  16-2 (10)

1/ The size difference becomes very obvious immediately with Oquendo looking like he's matched against his son.  Nonetheless, both fighters are extremely cautious.  Bispo looks really stiff with very little head movement and slow lethargic punches.  Oquendo is loose and starts looking to counter Bispo's lazy jab.  Oquendo lunges with long rights towards the end of the round that miss their mark but he still does enough to win the round.  OQUENDO

2/ It is becoming quite clear that if Bispo won 16 professional fights - they must have been against opponents from his village in Sao Paolo, Brazil.  A steady chorus of boos echoes from the crowd :30 into round 2.  A solid left by Bispo comes from somewhere and lands to the body of Oquendo but is followed by another :30 of nothing.  I could barely hear the bell from the boos.  OQUENDO

3/ Oquendo is overly cautious of Bispo's lackluster offense.  Oquendo is clearly the better fighter; yet he is much too tentative to take control.  Oquendo squeaks out this round ONLY due to Bispo's inacactivity.  OQUENDO

4/ Bispo is finally doing something, now he's on his toes playing cat & mouse as Oquendo decides to follow him around the ring.  Bispo shows some success dodging Oquendo's lunges and lands a few counter shots of his own from awkward angles; it is understood at this point that Bispo can't do anything to instill much damage, however.  If Bispo had not been knocked halfway across the ring every time he got hit he may have WON this round.  OQUENDO

5/Oquendo finally realizes that Bispo cannot hurt him so he starts loading up with EVERY shot.  He comes in much more frequently now rocking Bispo throughout the round.  Bispo foolishly disregards the obvious size and talent differential and decides to stand his ground against Oquendo and stop the lateral movement.  Oquendo begins to pull away.  OQUENDO

6/ Oquendo starts pumping hard jabs into Bispo's right shoulder evidently to take away his nonexistent jab.  Just as it becomes clear that Oquendo should end the fight so we can go home, Bispo lands his BEST punch of the fight.  Actually, I think it was just Bispo's ONLY power shot of the fight - a straight left that rocks Oquendo.  It wasn't enough to win the round which suggests Oquendo's dominance throughout.   OQUENDO

7/ Oquendo staggers Bispo again midway through the round yet allows him to escape and land a looping wild left of his own.  Bispo lands a few more but continues to get bombed by Oquendo.  This is clearly Bispo's best round, yet  he is staggered so many times I don't see how any of the judges could grant him the round.  OQUENDO

8/ Most of the crowd has already dispersed at this point and those remaining aren't really paying attention.  There's an elderly couple doing the tango in one of the aisles which seems to be garnering more onlookers than the square dance in the ring.  Bispo is strictly on survival mode at this point making it impossible to win the round regardless of Oquendo's inability to do much damage.  OQUENDO

9/ Bispo comes out circling while Oquendo stalks.  The fight now looks like a mismatched sparring session until Oquendo finally lands a series of belated rights to Bispo's head.  Bispo's cornermen mercifully chunk in a knotted up towel which tags their fighter in the head to stop the fight.

*OQUENDO wins 9th round TKO
