Taking a
peek at what fights are scheduled in the weeks to come it
looks like APRIL is gearing up for a rather active and quite
interesting month! So, I decided to break down a few match
ups for the faithful:
APRIL 2nd:
At 29-0,
DMITRIY SALITA is on a tear. His next
opponent RAUL MUNOZ is 20-11 & has only won
"2" of his last 7 fights. The fight is in Brooklyn, Salita's
backyard. - Don't go to the fridge on this one.
(What
the) SAM HILL is fighting again. Yes, the
same Sam Hill who pounded my old OEC buddy DAVE REID
into retirement in '01. Sam was 13-2 then, he's 17-10 now and
the 38 year old hasn't won a fight since January of '06. He's
fighting an 18-1 wildcat, MIKE PASCHALL in
Mike's backyard. - YOU do the math.
APRIL 3rd:
On the
RANDAL BAILEY - FRANCISCO FIGUEROA (don't go
to the fridge on this one either!) undercard is a local phenom
TOR HAMER (4-0). He's up and coming and is
quite impressive in the gym. You don't know him now but keep
your eyes open. Once the money men get a hold of him with
their team of trainers, you'll see what I mean.
APRIL 4th:
BRAD SOLOMON (4-0) from Atlanta is fighting someone.
You don't know him yet, but you will.
APRIL 10th:
Left-Hook JEFF LACY is fighting OTIS
GRIFFIN (Yes, the "Next Great Champ" Otis Griffin).
LACY hasn't fought since JERMAIN TAYLOR
whopped him up at the end of last year. Lacy looked shot in
the process. Griffin has lost 3 of his last 4. All 3 foes
had winning records like Lacy. All 3 KO'd him.
APRIL 11th:
PAUL WILLIAMS vs WINKY WRIGHT ~
Nobody will
ever eclipse how Williams KO'd CARLOS QUINTANA
in 1 round-4 months after losing to him. He
never trash-talks and he works with the kids in the gym; a
true CHAMP. 37 year old WRIGHT is 1-1-1 in his last 3 fights
and this fight should make him feel much older.
Undefeated CHRIS ARREOLA (26-0) will be
squaring up against JAMEEL McCLINE (39-9-3)
on the Wright/Williams undercard. Arreola has KO's in 23 of
his 26 victories & 2 of the 3 "survivors" whom he did not KO -
were DQ'd before he could get to them. If McCline's HEART
were even one hundredth of his frame it'd be double of what he
has now. My money's on ARREOLA.
April
17th
Cuban
phenom YURIORKIS GAMBOA has 12 KO's in 14
fights. Mind you, these aren't ordinary knockouts we're
talking here - can anyone say VICIOUS?
He's paired up against JOSE ROJAS
(25-6-1) who had some nice wins over quality opponents before
getting WAXED & battered around in 12 rounds by CHRIS
JOHN earlier this month. - can anyone say
G'night Jose?
April 24th:
GARY STARK (22-2) vs
ANTONIO ESCALANTE
(19-2) - Now this is a fight
that I want to see. For 3-1/2 years
GARY STARK built a
loyal following here in Manhattan. After flying down to
Alabama & dismantling one of my old adversaries, FREDDIE
COLLINS, in his pro debut in '02,
STARK won 17 fights
in a row. He was lightening fast, funny-showman both IN &
OUTside of the ring.
At 18-0
he faced an undefeated MIKE
OLIVER for the USBA Super Bantamweight Title and lost
a 12 round UD. Three months later in front of a sell-out
crowd in his hometown, he was KO'd by
ANDRES LEDESMA.
In STARK's next two fights he won every round by every judge
before inviting LEDESMA "back" to the Hammerstein Ballroom for
a rematch. GARY whooped LEDESMA good this time. STARK
followed it up with ANOTHER beatdown a few months later.
ANTONIO ESCALANTE
has KO'd 3 of his last 5 opponents, his LAST opponent being
MIKE OLIVER.
Upon doing so last October, ESCALANTE became the WBO Super
Bantamweight Champion. This fight is for his belt; it should
be a good fight!
