This
is not a great fight; it will not be a great fight to watch
and it certainly won't do any record breaking PPV figures.
Nevertheless from a Bernard Hopkins point of view you can
certainly understand why he wanted this fight, even if Roy
Jones Jr. is completely shot. In 1988 Bernard Hopkins
opened his professional career and lost his first fight, he
then went on a run of 22 straight fights without loss, then
came the world title shot.
His opponent for the vacant IBF middleweight title would
be Roy Jones Jr., a guy that was 21 fights unbeaten. So you
have two American fighters coming off 20 plus straight wins
fighting for their first world title. We all know Hopkins lost.
Hopkins of
course won that title eventually 18 months or so later, but
by the time Hopkins lifted
his middleweight world title Jones Jr. has defended it a
couple of times and moved on up to become Super
Middleweight champion of the world.
So one could assume that if there was any fight that Hopkins would
like to avenge it would certainly be that defeat, who could
blame him?
Bernard Hopkins is 45 years old and still one of the best
if not the best pound for pound fighter in the world right
now. After a career spanning 22 years he can fight whoever
he wants.
I can certainly see Bernard Hopkins beating Roy Jones Jr.
with ease and avenging that fight in 1993. It will still
get people tuning in but a lot won’t bother, I probably
won’t have much choice as I doubt the U.K. networks will
cover it. On a personal note, I will be at the MEN Arena
that night watching Hopkins's next opponent David Haye
defend his heavyweight crown again John Ruiz.
