IBF interim jr. welterweight champion SHARMBA
MITCHELL has asked his promoter Gary Shaw to file a
missing persons report on undefeated British jr. welterweight contender
RICKY HATTON. Hatton and his promoter Frank Warren
were scheduled to sign off on a formal contract last week for a
June 5 title clash against Mitchell on terms that had already
been agreed upon in Manchester, England. The fight was scheduled to take place
at the MEN Arena in Manchester, and televised nationally on
SHOWTIME.
"We are VERY concerned about Ricky,"
said Shaw. "After Ricky and Sharmba won their fights in Manchester on April 3,
we met and agreed to their terms for a June 5 fight between Ricky and Sharmba
for Sharmba's title. SHOWTIME was very excited about televising it and
Sharmba's side had no problem returning to Manchester for the title
defense. The only things needed were the signatures of Ricky and
Frank."
"We just cannot believe Ricky would
back out of his first real world title opportunity," continued Shaw. "After
all, even Ricky's own website states,
'He now looks to make 2004 a landmark year
in his mission
to blaze a trail
towards the very
best fighters
in the division and
the titles they possess.'
Anyone with information on Ricky
Hatton's whereabouts are encouraged to contact Gary Shaw immediately at
(201) 281-7800. Rumors abound that Ricky has been seen in the
Hertford area of England being driven under heavy guard in a late model Bentley
with license plates 9FW.
