When I say most importantly, I don't mean it as a put down to Mayweather and/or Castillo, quite the contrary. They had already danced before and for all the controversy that ensued I still felt that the right man got the decision, and would again.
There is no doubt in my mind, and many others, that Floyd Jr. is an exceptionally talented fighter. He hasn't really been the same since the falling out with his Daddy, Floyd Sr., but still, he remains truly special. Castillo is a tough cookie, ready to trade and rumble center ring anytime. Styles make fights, and these two could probably fight ten times with the same end result; an exciting fight, with Mayweather on top.
Mayweather danced, boxed, razzled and dazzled throughout the majority of the bout. He also traded with Castillo seemingly more comfortable than he has in the past. His jab was pumping, he is very elusive when he boxes from the outside and his right hand was doing some damage last night.
Castillo had his moments, busting Mayweather's nose and mouth in the 5th and 6th rounds. However, with each round, it became quite clear who was running the show. The punch output seldom lies, and José Luis was slowing down to a crawl with his blows.
Towards the last rounds, Mayweather dug deep and put on a demonstration of quickness, stamina and yes, superiority over his opponent. The scores reflected it: 115-113, 115-113 and 116-113.
On with the "main" event... The battle of the giants: Wladimir Klitschko, 26, 6'6" - 250 lbs, 81-1/2" reach, 39-1, 36 KOs. Jameel "Big Time" McCline, 32, 6'6" - 263 lbs., 80" reach, 28-2-3, 16 KOs. His last loss came about in April 1996.
As most of you know, I am a strong believer in ring walk attitude. McCline came out with a deep frown on his face, blowing air out of his mouth, looking down right worried to me. Wladimir on the other hand, seemed calm, cool, collected and most importantly, extremely confident. This round goes to Klitschko 10-8.
Center of the ring stare down was no different. McCline kept searching for invisible bugs on the mat, while Wladimir stared him up and down, hoping for some eye contact. This round goes to Klitshcko 10-9.
With the opening bell we see a very stiff and uncomfortable McCline, throwing a semblance of a jab which wasn't even reaching his opponent. His punch stats for that assault: 37 thrown, 4 connected... Pitiful!
Why bother you with the blow by blow? It went Wladimir stalks and connects, McCline moves and still gets hit. In the fifth round Jameel slowed down to a crawl, and his legs seemed all but gone. Klitschko was having his way with him, and it was beginning to show.
Fighting on pure instinct and adrenaline, McCline comes back in the 6th round and unleashes a flurry that seems to stun Wladimir momentarily. McCline was aggressive here, fighting Klitschko back.
Rounds 7 and 8 were more of a cat and mouse game. It was just a matter of time before Klitschko would catch McCline flush, sparing him any further punishment.
The crowd booed loudly in the ninth round, prompting Wladimir to throw that gorgeous double hook which hurt McCline. McCline's corner had this advise for their man: "Jameel, you gotta fight, baby. Put your hands in his face." To which the big man replied: "You don't think I'm trying?"
More booing in the tenth, and Wladimir had heard enough. He went after McCline putting him down with two left hooks and a right uppercut. Jameel was hurt big time, although he did beat the count and was able to make it to his corner.
Ringside physician and Commissioner Marc Ratner visited the corner and the consensus was to stop the massacre, earning Wlad an 10th round TKO.
Wladimir Klitschko can fight. If only he had an American trainer, and perhaps a bit more of a killer instinct... The jab kicks butt, the double left hooks are picture perfect and always on target. He seldom wastes punches, and when all else fails, the right hand can put horses to sleep.
Hard core boxing fans get sweaty palms, butterflies in their stomachs, an incredible adrenaline rush prior to a "big" fight card. Such was the case for yours truly with Mayweather, Jr. vs Castillo, but most importantly McCline vs Wladimir Klitschko.
