DANGER ZONE: DE LA HOYA AND MAYORGA GO AT IT AGAIN... By Elisa Harrison |
|
Oscar de la Hoya and
Ricardo Mayorga can't seem to play nice at their press conferences.
While it is true that Oscar has never really shown disrespect towards
any opponent, with the exception of Fernando Vargas, it is also true
that it is very, very difficult to show restraint with Ricardo Mayorga,
and Oscar's patience and respectful manner are being tested by the
antics of the Nicaraguan matador.
Tuesday afternoon
at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel in Los Angeles, California, the two men
had to be separated once again, and the verbal salvos keep getting more
heated with each passing day.
Oscar showed
Mayorga that he is not intimated by his antics, adding, "you have
disrespected me twice already. Yesterday you said something about my
wife and today you insulted my race. I am not going to let you get
away with that. Come May 6th I am going to knock you out, believe it. I
am going to knock you out..."
Oscar's words were
delivered with what seemed like controlled anger, and while the message
was succinct and deliberate, it never seemed to bother Mayorga, who came
clad in an extravagant bullfighter outfit, or 'traje de luces' if you
prefer the Spanish name for the attire.
Floyd Mayweather
Sr. clapped enthusiastically for his trainee as he exited the podium,
even though Floyd probably didn't understand a thing that was being
said. Oscar and Mayorga exchanged verbal daggers in Spanish.
Nevertheless, Floyd Sr. had words for 'El Matador' as well, admonishing
him, "if you put your hands on me, you are going to go out."
Even Don King
seemed a bit frustrated with the turn of events, and although deep
inside he must be loving it, he did say,
"we're never even
going to make it to May 6." King is aiming for two million pay per view
buys (at $49.95 each); given Oscar's appeal and Mayorga's outrageous
behavior, the legendary promoter may not fall too short off the mark.
Six-time world
champion Oscar de la Hoya (37-4, 29 KO’s) will challenge the WBC super
welterweight reigning champion Ricardo Mayorga (28-5-1, 23 KO’s) on May
6, 2006 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. The bout will be
presented by Golden Boy Promotions and televised live on HBO
Pay-Per-View (9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT).
