BERNARD HOPKINS: FROM THE BIG HOUSE... TO THE BIG SHOW... TO THE UNDERCARD?

By Elisa Harrison

March 29 is fast approaching, and boxing fans all over will be running to their TV sets to watch.... Bernard Hopkins vs Morrade Hakkar??? NOT!

In what has to be one of the most humbling lessons ever dealt to a man, Mr. Hopkins who scored a tremendous upset victory over 'el gran campeón' Felix Trinidad to become the undisputed Middleweight champion of the world, has been granted a humiliating undercard appearance in his own hometown against an unknown mandatory opponent, in the undercard of two non-Philly fighters, who will duel in a non-title match. Adding insult to injury, and deservedly so I may add, Hopkins' former trainer, Bouie Fisher, will be in the corner of one of the non-Philly fighters scheduled in the main event.

The only reason why Mr. Hopkins is on the card in the first place is because the bout was approved by none other than Lou DiBella himself. For those of you who may not know, DiBella is coming off a splendid KO legal victory against Bernard Hopkins. Although the dollar amount part of the award was -in my opinion- measly, $650,000, Mr. DiBella is now clear of the ugly defamation and label charges Hopkins attempted to brand him with.

It has been reported that HBO and Don King wanted Hopkins in the main event of this show, a proposition that Mr. DiBella reportedly refused; after much negotiating, DiBella's arm was raised once again, and the Cantankerous One was granted the lowly undercard spot.

Lou DiBella doesn't have ill wishes against Bernard, but the contempt in his words, speaks for itself: "It's pretty telling that in his second fight since beating Trinidad, he's opening a show in his hometown against a stiff who's not worthy of being his opponent and he's fighting for less money than he could have imagined he'd be making after beating Trinidad. I don't have to do anything bad to Bernard or wish anything bad on him. He's done it to himself."

The most interesting part of that evening might be the face off between one of boxing's most ingrate athletes and the two men who took him to the pinnacle of his career, only to be defamed, stiffed and dismissed without any consideration or respect.
