GOMEZ-TRINIDAD SUCCUMBS TO JAUREGUI'S POWER ON DE LA HOYA'S
HBO LATINO SHOW
By Elisa Harrison
The
Grand Olympic Auditorium in Los Angeles hosted Oscar de la
Hoya's 'Boxeo de Oro' on HBO Latino this Thursday, June 19.
A lightweight battle
broke out between undefeated Urbano Antillon and Ivan Valle.
This was a give and take proposition throughout, an exciting
see saw battle that saw both combatants give their all.
However, in the 10th and last round Antillon slipped in his
corner and was hit on top of the head while down by Valle.
Antillon was down for
a few seconds and looked like he wasn't going to be able to
continue. Eventually he did get up and came back with double
fisted vengeance for the remainder of the round. The
infraction cost Valle 2 points. In the end, the officials
returned a unanimous decision for Urbano Antillon, 96-91,
97-90, 96-92.
Urbano, a native of
Maywood, California, boosts his record to 10-0, 6 KOs, while
Valle, who hails from Los Mochis, Sinaloa, Mexico drops to
10-9, 16 KOs.
The main event
followed, and as a die hard Felix "Tito" Trinidad fan, I
welcome every opportunity to see Tito back in the ring. "El
gran campeón" was a proud member of the other Trinidad's
entourage, WBA Fedelatin Lightweight titlist and cousin Juan
"Golo" Gomez-Trinidad, who had a date with tough as nails
Javier Jauregui, from Guadalajara, Mexico.
The bout was a twelve
round WBA Lightweight title eliminator, and it proved to be
a bad night for the man from Cupey Alto, Puerto Rico.
Trinidad had a visible welt under his right eye coming into
the fight, probably the result of heated sparring sessions.
From the onset "Golo" seemed a bit sluggish, almost
overwhelmed. He tasted Jauregui's power early on and went
down in the second, third and fourth rounds, courtesy of
vicious left hooks to the head.
The final fall in the
fourth round came 44 seconds into the stanza, and Trinidad
took two unanswered left hooks to the head that had him
going down in scary fashion. He seemed totally incapable of
holding, or even keeping up his hands to protect himself.
This was definitely not the best of Gomez-Trinidad, and we
hope that he can get himself back on track soon.
In classy fashion the
Trinidads made no excuses for the devastating loss, and
wished Jauregui all the best in his future endeavors.
Jauregui, who claims to be inspired by the success of his
friend and WBC 122 lbs. champion Oscar "Chololo" Larios,
improves his record to 46-10-2, 33 KOs, while Trinidad drops
to 23-3, 16 KOs. This is the Puerto Rican's first loss since
having been knocked out by Johnny Walker in Miami in
February 5, 1999.
Publicity genius Oscar
de la Hoya announced during the proceedings that a press
conference will take place this Saturday, June 21st at 12:30
PM in downtown Los Angeles. Based on unconfirmed reports and
a brief interview with Marco Antonio Barrera it is expected
that an announcement will be made regarding the signing of
Barrera to a promotional contract with Golden Boy
Promotions. The featherweight people's champion recently
parted ways with his long time manager and promotional team.
