QUINTANA SHOCKS PAUL WILLIAMS TO CAPTURE WBO CROWN... by Tom Dickey @ ringside
Giant killer Carlos Quintana was back to his old tricks on Saturday night; this time capturing the WBO welterweight title from formerly unbeaten phenom Paul Williams. Just two years ago, Quintana shocked many when he upset then 27-0 Joel Julio; Quintana then lost some of that momentum when he was stopped by Miguel Cotto last year. But, on Saturday night, he played the giant killer once again, defeating Paul Williams by a unanimous decision, handing Williams his first defeat in 34 fights. The fight was the main event on the HBO "Boxing After Dark" card from the Pechanga Resort & Casino in Temecula, California.

CARLOS 'EL INDIO' QUINTANA CONQUERS TALL PAUL WILLIAMS... by Frank Gonzalez Jr.
Congratulations to the new WBO Welterweight Champion, Carlos “El Indio” Quintana (25-1, 19 KO’s), who challenged Paul “The Punisher” Williams (33-1, 24 KO’s) and came up big against the biggest, most feared fighter at Welterweight. Who really thought that the man who quit on his stool after five bruising rounds with Miguel Cotto would be the man to beat the man nobody wanted to fight. Williams’ phone will be ringing off the hook now.
Maybe Paul Williams just had a bad day or is not accustomed to fighting other skillful southpaws but whatever it was, the story of this fight was Quintana’s left hand and his ability to move in and out of range to tag Williams with clean punches all night.
I want to give a shout out to the judges for their honesty in scoring this fight. This is good for boxing.

QUINTANA STUNS WILLIAMS... by Oleg Bershadsky
The only question before the fight was not if Paul Williams would win, but how decisively would he be able to do it. A 6’ 1” welterweight, Williams’ imposing size and incessant punching were good enough to beat Antonio Margarito, but would fall short against the unheralded Carlos Quintana. So what went wrong?

'THE PUNISHER' RETURNS ON SATURDAY NIGHT FROM THE PECHANGA RESORT & CASINO... by Tom Dickey
Paul Williams has quickly gone from major prospect to world champion. His transformation became complete last July when he knocked off Antonio Margarito for the WBO crown and moved his untarnished record to 33-0 with 24 KOs. Unfortunately, the win over Margarito also brought about the conclusion that Williams is definitely boxing's most avoided fighter. His height and southpaw style have discouraged many fighters from wanting to tangle with him.

HBO BAD: PAUL WILLIAMS VS. CARLOS QUINTANA AND ANDRE BERTO VS. MICHEL TRABANT, SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 9
HBO's late-night boxing series presents a night of compelling welterweight action when HBO Boxing After Dark: Paul Williams vs. Carlos Quintana and Andre Berto vs. Michel Trabant is seen Saturday, Feb. 9 at 9:45 PM (ET/PT), from the Pechanga Resort and Casino in Temecula, Cal., exclusively on HBO.
In the main event, undefeated welterweight champ Paul Williams (33-0, 24 KOs), from Augusta, Ga., takes on Carlos Quintana (24-1, 19 KOs), from Moca, Puerto Rico, in a scheduled 12-round contest. Williams is making his first title defense after winning the belt in a hard-fought contest against Antonio Margarito in July 2007. Quintana's only defeat came at the hands of superstar Miguel Cotto.

IS PAUL WILLIAMS THE 'MOST FEARED' MAN IN BOXING?
On Saturday night, Feb. 9 at the Pechanga Resort & Casino in Temecula, California, and televised on HBO, the man known as “The Punisher” for his ability to batter, dismantle and disarm his opponents with an endless and crowd-pleasing array of power punches, will make the first defense of his WBO crown against the only highly-ranked welterweight showing any willingness to step into the ring with him – Carlos Quintana (24-1, 19 KOs).
