ARENA
BOX PROMOTION WINS PURSE BID FOR McCALL - GOMEZ
Arena Boxing Promotions won purse
bids for the WBC International heavyweight title fight between Oliver McCall and
his mandatory challenger Juan Carlos Gomez, a native of Cuba living in Germany.
Arena Boxing Promotions was the only promoter to bid on the fight, with an
offer of $550,00.
This is the highest amount ever offered for a
WBC International championship, which is becoming more and more popular as a
steppingstone for the WBC world championship.
Seventy percent of the offer
($385,000) will go to the champion, McCall, and thirty percent ($165,000) will
go to Gomez. Arena announced today that the fight will land in Berlin October 19
- if McCall doesn't relinquish the title that is. Gomez beat McCall back in 2005
but then tested positive for cocaine and got suspended. He is now promoted by
Arena and back in Hamburg where he started his pro-career and became WBC champ
at cruiser despite a well documented wild lifestyle. McCall upset Sinan Samil
last time out.

BERNARD HOPKINS HAMMERED BY THE NSAC TO THE TUNE OF $200,000...
The Nevada State Athletic
Commission has levied a whopping $200,000 fine against Bernard Hopkins for
pushing Winky Wright in the face during their weigh-in the day before their July
21 clash at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas. No one was injured in scuffle, which took
place while the fighters faced off, but the Nevada commission wants to send a
message of no tolerance for pre-fight fisticuffs and hammered "The Executioner"
for 6% of his $3 million purse. After the fight Hopkins implied that the
incident was a preplanned tactic to create more interest in the fight.
