ASHLAND, KY - Cory “The Cobra” Phelps and White Lightning
Promotions have received numerous requests for their March 22nd
professional boxing match against Bobby Gunn to be made
available on the Internet. The 6 round fight, which resulted
in a highly controversial draw, was purchased at the event
from the promoter by Larry Phelps, the father and trainer of
Cory Phelps. While the initial reports regarding the cause
of the bloody mess that was made of Gunn’s face (which Bobby
Gunn reported as requiring 36 stitches) was incorrectly
reported as an accidental head-butt, the video clearly shows
that the cut Gunn suffered was the result of punches, not
head-butting. As the video also shows, Cory Phelps is the
much taller of the two fighters and it is Gunn who tells the
referee that he was head-butted as the referee is separating
both Phelps and Gunn after they tied up during some inside
fighting in round one. In the video, the referee is unaware
that any foul has taken place (because there was not any foul
by Phelps, head-butt or otherwise) until Gunn pleads with the
referee. It is only at that point that the referee decides to
have the ring doctor take a look at the injury to determine if
the fight would continue. The doctor examines Gunn and allows
the fight to continue. It is also worth noting that the ring
doctor never had to interfere with the fight from that point
on. As the video will accurately demonstrate, Cory Phelps
controls the fight with his cobra-like jab and crisp, clean
punches to Gunn’s head and body.
In
light of the negative and false comments made by Bobby Gunn
regarding the outcome of this fight, and the terms of the
contract, which Team Phelps and White Lightning Promotions
have addressed in a previous press release, Team Phelps is
pleased to provide boxing fans worldwide the entire 6 round
fight via the Internet at the link at the end of this
article. Team Phelps and specifically Cory “The Cobra” Phelps
would like to, once again, inform Mr. Gunn that they are eager
to set the rematch. Team Phelps is currently working
diligently to make the rematch a reality.
Larry Phelps of Team Phelps had this to say, “Obviously, we
would love to fight Bobby Gunn again, and we are very
interested in making the rematch. I have personally made
several calls to FELKO Promotions (Gunn’s promoter for the
March 22nd fight in AZ) and none of my calls have
been returned. Since our performance in the Gunn fight, we
have had several big opportunities come our way. If we do not
hear from the Gunn camp soon, we will be on to bigger and
better things.”
