PETER WBC CHAMP - STOPS MASKAEV
IN SIX... by George Elsasser
The HBO twin-bill from Cancun, Mexico topped its card with
heavyweight Oleg Maskaev defending the WBC strap against challenger Samuel Peter
- and all went as expected, with the power punching Nigerian catching up to the
transplanted Russian at the 2:56 mark of stanza six.
PETER PUMMELS MASKAEV, WINS BY
TKO 6... by Frank Gonzalez Jr.
Sam Peter’s aggressiveness was the
difference in this fight. Maskaev lost the first round by not punching enough.
He did better in the second as he jabbed well and connected with a few scoring
blows. Peter landed the bigger punches but Maskaev was starting to realize that
by using simple boxing techniques, he could catch Peter with a big right hand
somehow. It didn’t happen. Peter won the second by doing more damage.
CAMPBELL MUGS DIAZ - CLAIMS LIGHTWEIGHT BAUBLES... by George Elsasser
The HBO Saturday double-dip from Cancun, Mexico coughed up a
dandy co-feature to the Maskaev-Peter heavyweight title fight with a show
stopping lightweight multi-title scorcher with Juan Diaz defending against
veteran Nate “Galaxxy Warrior” Campbell.
NATE CAMPBELL GETS HIS DUE!...
by Frank Gonzalez Jr.
Congratulations to Nate “Galaxxy Warrior” Campbell (32-5-1, 25 KO’s) who
dethroned WBO/IBF/WBA Lightweight Champion, Juan “Baby Bull” Diaz (33-1, 17
KO’s) at the Plaza de Toros in Cancun Mexico Saturday night. It was an exciting
fight from start to finish, as Nate chose to go right after Diaz’s body and
pressure him like no one ever had. It was a good strategy and Campbell proved to
be the more accurate puncher of equal tenacity.

CASTILLO FAILS TO MAKE WEIGHT... AGAIN!
Jose Luis Castillo was invited by WBC President Jose Sulaiman to step to the
scales after the heavyweights ceremonial weigh-in, in advance of
Friday's official weigh in for the lower-weight fighters.
He tipped the scale at 147-1/2 pounds and would have needed to make 140 pounds by
Friday's weigh in to qualify for the scheduled WBC super lightweight eliminator
against undefeated WBC No. 1-ranked contender Timothy 'Desert Storm'
Bradley.
Jose Luis
Castillo was unable to make weight, so the match was scratched.
DON - JUAN NO MORE AFTER HISTORY MAKING FIGHT IN CANCUN!
Boxing promoter Don King made
a surprise announcement on Wednesday that he will no longer represent undefeated
unified lightweight world champion Juan "Baby Bull" Diaz after his match on
Saturday with Nate "Galaxxy Warrior" Campbell in Cancun, Mexico.
King has represented Diaz since September 2006, and it is
highly unusual for the world's greatest promoter to give up on
a star client without an attempt to keep him in his stable of
fighters.
