Zach "Jungle Boy" Walters is quickly becoming one of the Twin
Ports (combination of Duluth, Minnesota and Superior, Wisconsin) main
attractions. On Saturday night in Superior, Wisconsin, Walters fought the most
important fight of his career against former WBA world champion Carl Daniels for
the WBC-African Boxing Union Lt. Heavyweight title.
Walters, who has had trouble in the past with southpaws,
looked nervous in the opening rounds. However, he did not let his nerves get in
the way of his game plan which consisted of working the body of Daniels with
hooks and uppercuts. As Walters' punches found a home in the mid-section of
Daniels, Daniels straight left hands began to land consistently to the head of
the Jungle Boy.
As the sixth round got under way Walters body work began to
show, as Daniels pace started to slow, letting Walters clearly take over the
fight. At the end of the seventh round Daniels was wearing a bloody mask on his
face from cuts over his eyes that were caused by punches earlier in the fight.
Round eight never made it to the scorecards as Carl Daniels retired in his
corner giving Zach Walters victory #22 along with the WBC-ABU Lt. heavyweight
title. With the victory Walters improves his record to 22-2 (17 KO’s) while Carl
Daniels falls to 50-12 (32 KO’s).
Lt. heavyweight southpaw Phil "The Drill" Williams looked
impressive over Butch Hajicek. Williams switched from southpaw to orthodox
throughout the fight, worked behind smooth and powerful punches that landed
often to the head of Hajicek. To Hajicek’s credit he kept the pressure on
Williams, always coming forward, but it simply wasn’t enough. In the fourth
round a hard right hand sent Hajicek to the canvas. Hajicek was able to continue
but it would not last much longer. Williams again sent Hajicek to the canvas in
the fifth round, this time with a left hand. At the 1:02 mark of the fifth round
the fight was stopped, keeping Phil Williams' record perfect at 7-0 (7 KO’s)
while Butch Hajicek falls to 5-6 (2 KO’s).
"Stone Cold" Gary Eyer made quick work out of Harold McLeod
dropping him twice in the first round with a barrage of punches. The referee
called the fight at 2:15 of the first round. Gary Eyer improves his record to
3-0 (2 KO’s) while Harold McLeod drops to 0-1.
The night got started with R.J. Lasse squaring off against
Mike Krull. Lasse was simply too much for Krull, ending the fight in the first
round. R.J. Lasse improves to 2-0 (1 KO) while Mike Krull falls to 0-5.
