MORALES-HERNANDEZ 'UNIFICATION IS THE JUSTIFICATION' JULY 31 ON HBO PPV

By Kenny Perrault

On July 31, at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas Nevada, Erik Morales and  Carlos Hernandez will  be putting their belts on the line in a partial unification.  Morales, 40-1 (34 KO's), who hails from Tijuana Mexico last fought in February and captured the WBC super featherweight title with a 12 round unanimous decision over Jesus "El Matador" Chavez.

Erik "El Terrible" Morales has held titles at 122, 126 and 130 pounds who has fought in 18 world title bouts. His only loss came in his second fight with former featherweight king Marco Antonio Barrera. Morales has been in the ring with the likes of Paulie Ayala, Guty Espadas, Marco Antonio Barrera, Kevin Kelley, Wayne McCullough, In-Jin Chi, Junior Jones, Daniel Zaragoza and Jesus Chavez all past and current champions. At age 27 Morales is in his 11th year as a professional boxer.

On the other side of the ring will be Carlos "Famoso" Hernandez 40-3-1 (24 KO's). Hernandez, who is a California native, became El Salvador’s first world boxing champion in February, 2003. He will be putting his IBF title on the line for the second time since he last fought in October of 2003.

In his last bout "Famoso" walked away with a unanimous decision win against former champion Steve Forbes. The bout was stopped after nine rounds due to a cut caused by a headbutt.

Hernandez has not fought the same kind of competition as Morales, but he has been in the ring with one of boxing's best -if not the best- Floyd Mayweather, Jr.  Even though he ended up a unanimous decision looser in the bout , Hernandez walked away with the distinction of handing Mayweather the first knockdown of his career, as Mayweather's right glove touched the canvas in the sixth round.

Hernandez is 33 years old and is also in his 11th year of his professional boxing career.  “My country has suffered a lot but thank God I am the first champion from El Salvador" said Hernandez. "I have motivation and strength from my people. I will fight Morales with all my heart and with all of my countrymen rooting for me.”

The Morales vs. Hernandez pay-per-view telecast, beginning at 9pm ET/6pm PT on July 31st, has a suggested retail price of $39.95, will be distributed by HBO Pay-Per-View and will be available to over 48 million pay-per-view homes. The bout will be shown on HBO PPV for $39.95.
