SHOWTIME IMPRESSIVE

By Kenny Perrault

Showtime served up a triple decker tonight that was well worth the watch. To start off the night heavyweights Jeremy Williams and Samuel Peter met in the ring. Both fighters were active in the first round passing on the usual "feeling out" round.  Williams had the quicker hands but in the end it didn't matter. Early in the second round Samuel Peter unleashed a huge left hook that connected flush to Williams’ head and sent him crashing hard to the canvas. The back of Williams' head hit the canvas hard. Williams laid motionless on the canvas with arms still stretched out momentarily.

Referee Toby Gibson gave up on the ten count to wave the fight off and get medical attention for the unconscious Williams. Williams seemed to be out of it for what seemed like two minutes putting a little fear into those who were watching. It was good to see him  finally sit up straight then be moved to a stool where he sat for awhile. Showtime’s Jim Grey was able to get a quick word with Williams where he said “I didn't even know I got hit." They then showed Williams a replay of the knockout, and all Williams could say was “Oh wow that was ugly". Jeremy Williams also said “I might just be done, if I can't be this guy then who can I beat?"

With this impressive second round knockout Samuel Peter adds his name to the heavyweight contenders. With the win he picks up the vacant NABF title and improves his record to 21-0 (18 KO's) while Jeremy Williams falls to 41-5-1 (36 KO's).

Jeff Lacy found his way back into the ring tonight only two months after capturing the IBF super middleweight title. He was making the first defense of his title against tough and experienced Omar Sheika who came into the ring a 25-1 underdog. Sheika showed from the start he was there to fight and not lie down. Sheika shook Lacy momentarily in the second round catching Lacy by surprise.

The early rounds seemed to go to Sheika who surprised Lacy with his hand speed. Lacy who is known to be a slow starter began to get into a good rhythm in the middle rounds. It was clear Lacy was the harder puncher but Sheika took most of Lacy's hardest punches in stride only to fire back with his own. As the rounds pressed on so did Lacy, landing more shots with bad intentions behind them. But to the surprise of most, Sheika would stay on his feet throughout the 12 round bout, never completely out of the fight.

The later rounds also belonged to Lacy, his power the deciding factor in the fight. Most of the rounds were fought at a fast pace with both fighters giving it their all, standing toe to toe at times. The twelfth and final round was the best of the fight as both men threw everything they had left, bouncing punches off each other's heads and bodies. In the end all three judges scored it in favor of champion Jeff Lacy with the scores of 115-113 twice and 117-113.

Jeff Lacy got a taste of what it's like to be in the big leagues tonight improving his record to 18-0-1 (14 KO's). Even in defeat Omar Sheika's stock rose tonight with his gutsy performance, his record falls to 26-7 (17 KO's).

The main event featured WBC lightweight champion Jose Luis Castillo against former WBA super featherweight champion Joel Casamayor. Casamayor used his movement and speed in the early rounds to stay away from the oncoming Castillo who stalked Casamayor throughout the bout. As each round passed Casamayor's movement became slowly nullified, which allowed Castillo to find his way inside, where he did some of his best work. As the rounds passed by Casamayor began holding more and more every time Castillo got close.

Castillo was starting to land at a higher rate in the middle and late rounds while Casamayor seemed to get tired, not using his legs as much as he had in the early rounds. Casamayor elected to stand and trade with Castillo on a few occasions and each time Castillo landed the better shots. Castillo came out like a bull charging at a matador in the final round making sure the last round was scored in his favor. The final 30 seconds of the bout saw a vicious exchange of punches from both fighters and Casamayor's mouth piece was sent flying from his mouth. Both fighters fought hard but the judges saw it in favor of champion Jose Luis Castillo by split decision with the scores of 116-112, 117-111 Castillo and 115-113 Casamayor. Jose Luis Castillo defends his WBC title and improves to 51-6-1 (45 KO's) while Joel Casamayor falls to 31-3 (19 KO's).
