WHO WILL PACQUIAO FIGHT NEXT? THE PEOPLE HAVE SPOKEN!

By Kenny Perrault

Recently I wrote an article titled 'What's next for Manny Pacquiao?' A poll was set up along with the article, which included new and old foes of Manny Pacquiao. The poll included Erik Morales, Marco Antonio Barrera, Juan Manuel Marquez, Robbie Peden, Jorge Barrios, Jesus Chavez, Vicente Mosquera, and the option of someone not listed. Over 1,000 votes were tallied and the people have spoken, choosing Erik Morales with 401 votes or 36% of the votes, (as of June 17, 2005 at 12:00 pm).*

The Pacquiao - Morales bout is still fresh in most peoples memory and why wouldn't it be? It was an instant classic, filled with thrills and drama. WBC Super Featherweight Champion and IBF Super Featherweight Champion Robbie Peden battled for the second spot on the poll but Barrera beat him out by a mere four votes.*

A Pacquiao - Barrera rematch would be interesting as Barrera seemed to have reinvented himself after the loss to Pacquiao. The IBF champ from Down Under Robbie Peden came in third. Peden, who recently won the vacant IBF title with a win over Nate Campbell, is scheduled to fight Marco Antonio Barrera; perhaps Pacquiao can get a bout with the winner of that fight.

The fourth spot on the poll belongs to WBA/IBF Featherweight champion Juan Manuel Marquez. A rematch between Pacquiao and Marquez depend on which weight class Pacquiao fights at. For now, it looks like Pacquiao is going to stick at Super Featherweight, so unless Marquez jumps up a weight class, this fight will be on hold.

The rest of the poll is rounded out in this order: Jesus Chavez in fifth, Jorge Barrios in sixth, Vicente Mosquera in seventh, and not surprisingly, the option to vote someone not listed came in last. It really does not matter who Pacquiao fights next, the people will watch. Manny Pacquiao is one of the most exciting fighters in the world and it really does not matter who he will fight next, fans the world over will be watching.
