Before Manny Pacquiao and Ricky Hatton ever stepped into the
ring Saturday night I played the fight out in my head numerous times with many
possible scenarios, none of which were a devastating second round knockout by
Pacquiao. It didn’t take long for this “super fight” to turn into a super
beating. Pacquiao had Hatton down twice in the first round and flash knockdowns
they were not.
In between rounds Hatton had the look of a beaten fighter on
his face already. His eyes had a blank look to them as if he was in shock. To
Ricky’s credit he came out in the second round trying to land ferocious punches
of his own but Pacquiao's speed and power were simply too much for the
Englishman on this night. With only a few seconds remaining in the second round,
the “Hitman” became a target as Manny Pacquiao landed a crushing left hook that
laid Hatton out. No ten count was needed, as referee Kenny Bayless waved the
fight off.
Hatton laid motionless on his back until ringside doctors
moved him to his side. It was a scary few minutes as Hatton laid there
unconscious. To everyone’s relief Hatton would finally make it back on his feet
and walked to his dressing room. Manny Pacquiao made a big statement in the
fight proving to all he is the Pound 4 Pound best fighter in the world, putting
Floyd Mayweather Jr. on notice.
Mayweather announced his return to the ring July 18th
against Juan Manuel Marquez. While that fight may be interesting, the only fight
I and many other boxing fans want to see is Floyd Mayweather versus Manny
Pacquiao. If they meet we’ll know once and for all who the real king in the
sport really is. But I get the feeling Mayweather is in no hurry to find out
anytime soon.
