WHAT'S ON DECK FOR BOXING FANS...

By Kenny Perrault

The next couple of months will prove that it's a great time to be a boxing fan. The list of fights seems to go on and on here is an inside look at them.  On September 11th, Puerto Rico's rising prospect Miguel Cotto 20-0 (16 KO's) will fight Kelson Pinto 20-0 (18 KO's) of Brazil for the vacant WBO light welterweight title.

Cotto has been groomed for greatness since turning professional after competing in the 2000 Olympics. Also on the card is former WBO welterweight champion Antonio Margarito 30-3 (21 KO's) facing Puerto Rican southpaw Daniel Santos 28-2 (20 KO's) in a rematch. Their first bout ended in a 'No Contest' in the first round after an accidental head butt opened a nasty cut over Margarito's right eye. Margarito is jumping up in weight with hopes of taking Santos' WBO title. Both fighters hope to walk away with the victory and hopes of positioning themselves to meet the winner of the Winky Wright - Shane Mosley rematch.

Just a week after that twin bill comes one of boxing's most anticipated matches in years. Undisputed middleweight champion Bernard "The Executioner" Hopkins 44-2-1 (31 KO's) will meet one of boxing's most loved fighters "The Golden Boy" Oscar De La Hoya 37-3 (29 KO's). Both men fought on the same card earlier this summer both winning. However, Oscar's win raised a few eyebrows as some people thought Felix Sturm did enough to walk away the winner.

In the end, some interest was lost in this super showdown between two of boxing's most dominating fighters but plenty of expectation still remains. Hopkins will be putting his WBC, WBA, AND IBF titles on the line while Oscar puts his WBO title on the table. Not only will the winner walk away as the best fighter in the middleweight division, he could possibly walk away as the best fighter in the world.

On the undercard Juan Manuel Marquez 42-2-1 (33 KO's) puts his WBA and IBF titles on the line against Orlando Salido 20-8-1 (13 KO's). Marquez is coming off one of the toughest fights of his career, having fought to a draw against Manny Pacquiao. Despite being knocked down three times in the first round Marquez battled back into the fight, making it one of the most memorable fights of the year. Marquez is taking this fight while a rematch with Pacquiao comes together. Mexico's Marco Antonio Rubio 23-0-1 (23 KO's) faces Kofi Jantuah 27-1 (17 KO's) in a WBA light middleweight title eliminator.

September 23rd will feature the comeback of one of boxing's best trash talkers, James Toney, 67-4-2 (43 KO's) against Rydell Booker 22-0 (12 KO's) in a 12 round heavyweight bout. The vacant WBC continental Americas and IBA title will be on the line. Along with the two titles the bout is also a WBC title eliminator fight. The undercard features Cedric Boswell against former cruiserweight champion Imamu Mayfield in a ten round bout. The card will also feature former champion Wayne "The Pocket Rocket" McCullough.

Roy Jones Jr. 49-2 (38 KO's) returns to the ring September 25th against IBF light heavyweight champion Glencoffe Johnson 40-9-2 (27 KO's). This is Jones' first fight back since his surprising second round knockout loss to Antonio Tarver. Johnson has been in the ring with some of the best fighters from middleweight to light heavyweight but has never been in the ring with a fighter of RJJ's skills. Still no one knows how Jones will react in the ring after being knocked out in his last bout. Will he be a little gun shy? Or will he come out to prove the point he's still the best in the world. On the undercard southpaw Mark "Too Sharp" Johnson 44-3 (28 KO's) puts his WBO super flyweight title on the line against Ivan Hernandez 18-0-1 (12 KO's).

October 2nd marks the comeback of boxing great Felix Trinidad 41-1 (34 KO's) in his first fight since 2002. Trinidad will meet recently troubled Ricardo Mayorga 27-4 (23 KO's). Mayorga will be fighting at middleweight for the first time after a brief stop at light middleweight earlier this year. Trinidad hopes to get past Mayorga and get in the ring with the winner of Hopkins - De la Hoya. Also on the card Zab Judah 31-2 (22 KO's) takes on Wayne Martell 24-2 (15 KO's) in a welterweight bout.  Judah is trying to make his mark at the welterweight division after a rough go of it so far, first loosing to Cory Spinks, then fighting to a split decision win over veteran Rafael Pineda. WBC cruiserweight champion Wayne Braithwaite takes on WBA champion Jean-Marc Mormeck 30-2 (21 KO's) in a partial unification match.

The same night HBO PPV puts on Trinidad Vs Mayorga, Showtime will try to get the public to go their way with showing an exciting night of boxing. The card features 2000 Olympian Jeff Lacy 16-0 (13 KO's) fighting for the vacant IBF super middleweight title against former title challenger Syd Vanderpool 35-2 (23 KO's). Also on the card Wladimir Klitschko 42-3 (39 KO's) makes his return to the ring after being defeated by Lamon Brewster. Klitschko seemed well on his way to an easy victory before running out of gas and being stopped by Brewster at the end of the 5th round. Klitschko will meet former Joe Mesi victim DaVarryl Williamson, 20-2 (17 KO's). Williamson last fought in April, beating Eliecer Castillo by majority decision. This fight will show where both men are at in the game right now. Williamson wants to prove his quick knockout loss to Joe Mesi was a fluke, while Klitschko wants to prove he's a better fighter than he has shown in his fights against Lamon Brewster and Corrie Sanders.

November 6th will feature undisputed junior welterweight king Kostya Tszyu 30-1 (24 KO's) in his first fight since early 2003. Tszyu will be meeting an old foe in Sharmba Mitchell 55-3 (30 KO's). In their first bout it Mitchell came into the ring with a sore knee; instead of pulling out and re-scheduling the match Mitchell opted to fight. The usually mobile Mitchell held his own until his knee caused too much pain for him to go on, retiring at the end of the seventh round. This match will give both fighters a chance to settle the score once and for all.
