WBA cruiserweight champion Jean Marc Mormeck met WBC champion Wayne Braithwaite in the most anticipated cruiserweight bout since Vassiliy Jirov fought James Toney. Braithwaite started the first round at a fast pace, throwing and landing both to the body and head. Mormeck started to open up more in the second round and did best when Braithwaite laid on the ropes, giving him the opportunity to throw punches. As the rounds went by Braithwaite found himself on the ropes more and more; to Braithwaite’s credit he never abandoned his body attack, but it wasn't enough to stop the hard hitting Mormeck in the later rounds.

Braithwaite looked good the first half of the seventh round until he again found himself on the ropes; this time Mormeck landed a hard right hand that sent the 'Big Truck' to the canvas for the first time in his career. Braithwaite managed to get back to his feet but found himself on unsteady legs. With his legs not fully under him Braithwaite did the only thing he could do to make it out of the round and that’s hold. The holding got him out of the round on his feet. In the eighth round referee Dick Flaherty took a point from Braithwaite for holding. A clash of heads also opened a cut over Braithwaite’s left eye in the eighth round.

The championship rounds were fought at a slower pace, with Mormeck easing back his offensive opponent knowing he had a comfortable lead on the scorecards. Braithwaite didn't have enough in him to capitalize on the less offensive Mormeck to get back into the fight. As the final bell rang all three judges saw it in favor of Jean Marc Mormeck with the scores of 114-112, 115-111, and 116-110. Jean Marc Mormeck is now the WBA and WBC cruiserweight champion with a record of 31-2 (21 KO's) while Wayne Braithwaite drops to 21-0 (17 KO's).
