Andy Kolle and Matt Vanda first fought in 2007. That
fight was a close unanimous decision, which ended with Kolle's hand raised in
victory. Last night at the Grand Casino in Hinckley, MN the two
warriors fought a second time for Kolle's Minnesota state middleweight
championship belt.
While this fight did not lack excitement it was not
nearly as close as their first fight. Kolle a 6’1" southpaw worked
behind a stiff jab often followed with a straight left hand. Kolle's
constant 1-2 offense kept the smaller Vanda at a distance for much of
the fight. To Vanda’s credit he never stopped trying to come forward
and make it an inside fight. When Vanda was able to get past the rangy
southpaw's jab he would throw combinations to both head and body. As
the rounds went by Kolle was able to pile on the points continuously
working behind the right left combination. In the end the scorecards
all read in favor of Andy Kolle 99-92, 99-92, 97-93.
With the win, Andy Kolle improves his record to 21-2 (15 KOs) while
Matt Vanda drops to 42-11 (22 KOs).
Hector Orozco made easy work of Jeremy McLaurin in
the co-main event. McLaurin, the taller of the two, failed to use his
height and reach advantage throughout the entire fight. Orozco was
able to work on the inside at will often trapping McLaurin on the
ropes and unleashing punches to both the head and body. While McLaurin
is still young and has plenty of potential the fight belonged to
Orozco who won a unanimous decision with the scores of 60-45, 59-55,
and 58-56. Hector Orozco is now 2-5 (2 KOs) while McLaruin falls to
7-1 (5 KOs).
Gary Eyer proved once again why he is quickly
becoming one of Minnesota's favorite fighters to watch. He is all
action all the time. From the opening bell Eyer came out swinging
against Brad Patraw. Eyer never seems to stop throwing punches looking
like the Tasmanian devil at times. His swing first and worry about
retaliation later attitude paid off in the first round when he dropped Patraw
twice. Patraw came out in the second round firing right back making it
a toe to toe war. Sadly, the toe to toe action would not last long, as
the referee felt Patraw had taken too much punishment. The bout was
stopped
at the 1:16 mark of the second round. Gary Eyers record improves to
8-0 (6 KOs) while Brad Patraw loses his second straight fight falling
to 6-2 (4 KOs).
Danny Tierney won a split decision victory over Don
Copp in a 4 round lackluster bout. Most of the action came after the
fight when the ring collapsed. During the last round the ring slid
forward at least a foot. While they were announcing the winner the
ring gave way causing an hour delay for ring repairs.
