CAN ZAB JUDAH REVERSE THE JINX?

The last time Zab Judah fought Cory Spinks he didn't get his fill. This weekend on Showtime he's going back for seconds. When Zab Judah made the jump from light welterweight (140 lbs.) to the welterweight division (147 lbs.) there were no feeling out fights, Judah went directly into a match with undisputed champion Cory Spinks who was coming off a victory over the so called "man" of the welterweights, Ricardo Mayorga.

The match-up between Spinks and Judah didn't exactly generate fireworks in the minds of most boxing fans. It was a match-up of two slick southpaws; the true meaning of hit and not be hit.  The first half of the fight belonged to Spinks, as he used his jab and quickness to frustrate Judah who resorted to clowning around in the ring. At one point Judah turned his back to Spinks to say something to someone in the audience. Spinks saw an opening and jumped on the carefree Judah to win the round.  Just when it seemed that Spinks was going to run away with the victory Judah started to put the pieces of the puzzle together and began winning rounds.

Judah's rally came to a halt in the eleventh round when a Spinks' punch sent him to the canvas. Judah quickly sprung to his feet, showing no ill effects from the knockdown. Judah would rebound late in the 12th and final round scoring a knockdown of his own. Unlike Judah, Spinks was not clear headed once he managed to get to his feet. Spinks did his best to make it out of the around still standing and he succeeded.  Judah's late rally and knockdown were not enough to earn him the victory as the judges’ scorecards read 114-112 twice and 116-111 all in favor for champion Cory Spinks.

After the Cory Spinks fight, Zab Judah nearly clowned his way to a loss against veteran Rafael Pineda. Judah narrowly escaped with a split decision. Zab last fought in October 2004 against extremely overmatched Wayne Martell, who he sent to the canvas five times en route to a first round TKO.

Cory Spinks has only fought once since his fight with Zab Judah, against  Miguel Angel Gonzalez, who was a mere shadow of his former self. Spinks made easy work of Gonzalez almost pitching a shut out on the official score cards. While the welterweight division waits for Oscar de la Hoya and Shane Mosley to once again showcase their talents in the ring, the best fight appears to be a Cory Spinks - Zab Judah rematch.

In the second go around Zab Judah can't wait until the middle rounds to get into the fight. He also needs to make Spinks miss and counter punch.  Judah needs to drop the clowning around act, it does not win fights.  As for Cory Spinks, he must use his elusive style and keep Judah off balance and throw punches in bunches. The winner of the fight has potentially huge paydays ahead if both Oscar de la Hoya and Shane Mosley are true to their word  and once again fight at welterweight.
