GATTI AND LEIJA SHINE IN ATLANTIC CITY

The Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey was the site for HBO's double header fight card on Saturday night. To open the night young sensation Francisco Bojado fought Jesse James Leija in a ten round bout.  Thirty-eight year old Jesse James Leija turned back the hands of time against twenty-one year old Francisco Bojado.

Leija came out as the aggressor in the first round backing up Bojado with his jab and straight right hand. The only real set back Lejia faced in the fight came in the second round when Bojado landed a flush left hook to Leija's head that would send him to the canvas. Leija quickly regained his footing showing no signs of damage from the punch. Bojado seeing that Leija was in no serious trouble layed back and did not try to force a knockout.

After the knockdown in the second round Leija again took control of the fight by out boxing and out punching Bojado in most rounds. Leija's body attack may have been the key to his victory as Bojado's punch output dropped as each round passed by. The seventh round was one of the best rounds for Leija as Bojado opted to lay on the ropes hoping to counter Leija's punches. Bojado however did not land the crushing counter shots he had hoped for letting Leija land combos to Bojado's head and body.

Francisco Bojado started to open up more in the later rounds but it wouldn't be enough to stop the oncoming Leija, who was growing more confident as the fight wore on. In the end Leija proved to be too much for the younger Bojado as the judges scored it 95-94 Bojado, 96-93 Leija, and 95-94 Leija. The split decision victory improves Jesse James Leija's record to 47-6-2 (19 KO’s) while Francisco Bojado drops to 16-2 (11 KO’s).

The main event featured one of boxing's most beloved fighters Arturo "Thunder" Gatti against Leonard Dorin for Gatti's WBC Super Lightweight title. Gatti came out boxing as planned while Dorin, who stood four inches shorter than Gatti, tried to bully his way in taking punches to land his own.

As the second round got under way you started to get the feeling it was only a matter of time before Gatti threw his game plan to box instead of brawl out the window. However the fight was over before it had a chance to heat up as Gatti landed a crushing left hook to Dorin's liver. Dorin wouldn't fall immediately, as the punch had a delayed effect. Once the punch took effect Dorin fell to the canvas and was unable to recover as referee Randy Neuman reached the ten count.

Arturo Gatti kept his WBC Super Lightweight belt and improved his record to 38-6 (29 KO’s) while Dorin dropped to 22-1-1 (8 KO's).
