IBF Jr. Middleweight champion Kassim "The Dream" Ouma laid his title on the line against Kofi Jantuah tonight in Atlantic City, New Jersey. As always, Ouma started and finished the fight at a fast pace throwing punches non stop. Jantuah's first mistake may have been trying to go punch for punch with Ouma as he showed signs of exhaustion early in the bout. Jantuah had the right idea in the first round attacking Ouma's body but quickly abandoned the plan to head hunt. As early as the third round Jantuah was throwing one punch at a time hoping for a knockout. The knockout never came as Ouma got better with each passing round. Ouma never stopped throwing punches wether they were to the head or shoe shining the body of Jantuah. No worries if you stepped away and missed a round because they all looked the same. Ouma throwing non stop punches while Jantuah threw one punch at a time, landing occasionally, having no effect on the constantly oncoming Ouma.
Case in point, Kassim Ouma is a high volume puncher, and it was Kofi Jantuah's job to turn down the volume, but every time he tried it, Ouma simply turned it up even more. In the end, all three judges scored it in favor of Kassim Ouma with the scores of 118-110, 116-112, and 117-111. With the win, Kassim Ouma retains his IBF Jr. Middleweight title improving his record to 21-1-1 (13 KO's) while Kofi Jantuah drops to 28-2 (18 KO's).
In the main event WBC super lightweight champion Arturo "Thunder" Gatti squared off against former champion Jesse James Leija. The new and improved Gatti stuck to his game plan throughout the fight, using his boxing skills rather then brawling with Leija. Gatti worked behind a great jab, keeping Leija on the outside and out of range to land his punches. To Leija's credit he tried his best to get inside and entice a brawl with Gatti.
Gatti never stopped working behind his jab and in the fifth round it paid off when he followed his jab with a hard, straight right hand that landed flush on Leija's chin, sending him hard to the canvas. It looked as if Leija was down for the count, but he managed to make it to his feet. Referee Earl Brown asked Leija if he knew where he was and when Leija replied, Atlantic City, Brown let the fight continue.
Gatti now pounced on Leija, throwing hard punches with both hands. Leija finally got the fight he wanted and fought back gamely, but it was too late, as he was still feeling the effects from the knockdown. Gatti landed a hard left hook to the top of Leija's head that sent him to the canvas for the second time. Leija would not get back on his feet before referee Earl Brown reached the ten count. The time of the stoppage was 1:45 of the fifth round. With the victory Arturo Gatti may have placed himself in his first big PPV fight against Floyd Mayweather, Jr. later in the year. Arturo Gatti keeps his WBC title and improves his record to 39-6 (30 KO's) while Jesse James Leija falls to 47-7-2 (19 KO's). 1-29-2005 Brought to you by Saratogamist copyright 2001-2005 |
