Guerrero had a perfect record, the NABF title, and the number two ranking by the WBC; basically he had everything to lose while it was nothing short of a win-win situation for Gamaliel Diaz. Had he lost, it would have been no big deal, he would have gotten TV time and assuming he would have put forth a good effort, he would have secured himself more fights. But to pull off the upset? The unthinkable? Well it happened and now Gamaliel Diaz is in line to make a whole lot more money than he did tonight. It was clear from the onset Diaz was not just going to lay down, as he worked behind a good jab that surprisingly found its mark often. Diaz often beat Guerrero to the punch, out working him. As the fight progressed into the middle rounds, the 22-year-old Guerrero looked frustrated and confused, while Diaz kept coming forward, landing his shots. Many of the rounds were close and very physical, with both men tossing low blows and rabbit punches. However, it wasn't until the last half minute of the fight referee Dan Stell deducted a point from Diaz for hitting behind the head. Both fighters were warned throughout the bout for the rough house tactics and both were equally guilty of the above cited infractions, and I found it a bit too stern of referee Dan Stell to take a point with only 30 seconds left in the bout. Thankfully, the point deduction did not affect the final score. Gamaliel Diaz was named the winner with scores of 114-113, 115-112, and 115-112 for Guerrero. With the win Gamaliel Diaz improves his record to 20-5-2 (9 KO's) while Robert Guerrero falls to 16-1-1 (9 KO's). The night opened with 6' 2" welterweight Paul Williams against Alfonso Sanchez. Williams, who had a huge height and reach advantage, worked from the outside and pumped his right jab followed by the straight left into Sanchez's face for five rounds until Sanchez had taken enough and was sent to the canvas. Sanchez took out his mouthpiece and stayed on his knee until referee Marcos Rolases reached the ten count. Paul Williams improves to 28-0 (20 KO's) while Alfonso Sanchez falls to 20-4-1 (18 KO's).
