The Super Six Boxing World Classic Tourney got under way Saturday night and it did not
disappoint. To start the night former world middleweight champion Jermain “Bad
Intentions” Taylor met “King” Arthur Abraham. Jermain Taylor worked behind the
jab most of the night trying to break Abraham’s peek-a-boo style defense.
Abraham's defense paid off as Taylor
was unable to land his right hand. Although methodical, Abraham gets the job
done. He doesn’t have lightning speed or great footwork but he does posses
thudding power and sheer will to get to his opponent. As the rounds passed by,
Abraham inched closer and closer to Taylor, landing serious shots to his ribs
and face.
Taylor tried to work the body but the
shots were often deemed low by the referee, and eventually it cost Taylor
a point in the sixth round. JT was hurt early in the ninth round but somehow
managed to escape Abraham's oncoming attack. Going into the championship rounds
Taylor’s work rate began to drop and Abraham's now bone crunching punches were
landing with greater frequency.
Earlier this year Jermain Taylor and
fellow Super Six fighter Carl Froch fought an entertaining bout. Taylor was
ahead on the scorecards going into the 12th and final round but Froch
dug deep down and landed a devastating straight right hand that crumpled Taylor
to the canvas with only seconds remaining in the last round. Taylor once again
found himself in the 12th round against Abraham, this time not ahead
on the scorecards but surviving nonetheless, until a straight right hand landed
with less then 10 seconds remaining in the fight and again Taylor found himself
down and out in the last round. Abraham's knockout of Taylor was brutal. Taylor
hit the canvas extremely hard; as he laid on the ring mat, legs straight, right
arm half-raised in the air, twitching, you had to ask yourself if Jermain Taylor
should continue to fight after such a devastating knockout.
Taylor was brought to the hospital
after the fight where it was learned he suffered a concussion and short term
memory loss. Abraham racked up three points in the super six tournament by
scoring a knockdown and faces Andre Dirrell next. As for Jermain Taylor, he is
scheduled to meet Andre Ward in the next round but rumors of a replacement have
already began, most citing Allan Green as said replacement.
The second fight of the night and of
the Super Six Tournament featured Andre Dirrell against Carl Froch for Froch's
WBC super middleweight belt. Dirrell, who is the least experienced of the six
fighters in the tournament, walked into a hostile environment fighting Froch in
his hometown of Nottingham, England.
It was no secret coming into the
fight that Dirrell was the quicker of the two fighters, in both hand and foot,
and it showed from the opening bell. Dirrell who is known as the “Matrix” did
his best to distance himself from the always oncoming Froch . Many of the rounds
were close and hard to score for either man. As the fight entered the later
rounds, the exchanges began to heat up as did the action. Dirrell was penalized
a point in the 10th round for holding; however, it could be argued
that Froch deserved a point deduction himself for blows landed behind Dirrell's
head. As the two men started fighting closer,
Dirrell had no choice but to finally start sitting down on his punches throwing
with more power than he had earlier in the fight and to his credit he managed to
rock Froch late in the fight. However, when it was all said and done, Froch was
awarded the split decision victory with the scores of 115-112 twice and 114-113
Dirrell. Next up for Andre Dirrell is Arthur Abraham, while Carl Froch will
square off against Mikkel Kessler who will be fighting Andre Ward November 21st
to finalize the first round of this tournament.
With the first round started it’s hard
not to be excited about this tournament and the possibilities it brings to the
sport. One thing I would like to see is all three fights on the same night
rather then split apart by a month. This week we will be discussing the “Super
Six” on our Facebook page. To get the discussion started we will be asking,
"Which division would you most like to see “Super Six?" If you'd like to add
your opinion, become our friend on Facebook by going to
