Chad Dawson did
exactly what he was supposed to do Saturday night and that
was beat Glen Johnson convincingly. Unlike in their first
meeting there were not doubts as to who the clear
winner was. While Dawson may not have the power to satisfy
the blood thirsty fans, he does have to treat the fans of
the sweet science.
Leading up to
the fight I kept touching on the fact that sooner or later
Glen Johnson will start looking his age in the ring and it
started to show Saturday night. He did not look as fast and
his punches did not hit the mark like they have in the past.
I'm not saying he's a shot fighter but age is the one punch
most fighters never see coming.
Glen Johnson
tried to force Dawson into a brawl but was unsuccessful as
Dawson used his hand speed to fire off combinations. As
soon as he was done punching he would get out of the way
rather than hang around to admire his work. You could see
the frustration build in Johnson with Dawson's in and out
style. To Johnson's credit he never stopped trying, he
constantly came forward trying to pressure Dawson into a
fight. Unlike their first meeting, Dawson wasn't taking the
bait refusing to mix it up if he didn't have to. Glen's
corner at one point told him, "You have to move faster
forward, then he goes backwards."
Johnson tried
everything but found no remedy for Dawson's speed and
accurate punching. As the fight moved into the championship
rounds it was very clear that Dawson had finally become the
kind of fighter he was expected to be, a smart fighter who
used his smarts during all 12 rounds of the bout. The judges
score cards read 115-113 twice and 117-111 all in favor of
Chad Dawson. The 117-111 score card best represents the
fight.
Age can be a
fighter's worst enemy in the ring and now is the time for
Johnson to decide if he wants to keep fighting or move on in
life. Last night's fight was a perfect example of the old
saying, "While he's getting older, I'm just getting better."
Alfredo Angulo
absolutely mugged Harry Joe Yorgey last night in the opening
fight. "El Perro" was very aggressive from the opening bell,
cornering his opponent and unleashing a barrage of punches.
In the second round Angulo trapped Yorgey in the corner
again landing a monster right hand. It looked as if Harry
Joe would fall to the canvas but somehow stayed on his feet
but not for long, and he finally gave in and went to the
canvas. He managed to beat the ten count and survive the
round. Knowing Yorgey was still on shaky legs, Angulo jumped
on him in the third round. Once again he trapped Yorgey in
the corner, this time leveling him with a left-right
combination that sent him crashing to the canvas where he
would stay.
Alfredo "El
Perro" Angulo looked like a monster in the ring tonight but
would he fare the same way in a rematch with Kermit Cintron?
That's a rematch I would like to see happen, but can the
same be said for Angulo?
