WOULD MANNY PACQUIAO AGREE TO A TOURNAMENT?

We recently took a poll on our Facebook page asking the fans which weight class they would most like to see a "Super Six" tournament take place. Last week the Super Middleweight tournament began with two exciting fights that featured an incredible knockout and a very close decision which could have gone either way.

Even as I was writing the question, at which division would you most like to see a "Super Six" tournament held, I felt I already knew the readers'' answers, and let me tell you, our readers spoke very loudly. As you read this you'll know what division it is, it's none other than the welterweight division which features today's best fighters. It's not just the welterweight division alone, however, as 154 lbs. fighters can drop weight and fighters from 140 can go up a weight class. The names you can attach to this tournament would be endless. Shane Mosley, Manny Pacquiao, Miguel Cotto, Floyd Mayweather, Andre Berto, Timothy Bradley, Paul Malignaggi, Amir Khan, Kermit Cintron, Zab Judah, and possibly Antonio Margarito.

A tournament of this nature would hold enough "Super Fights" to last a decade. The possibilities are endless. Mayweather-Cotto, Pacquiao-Mosley, oh, and how about Cintron-Cotto? That one would be huge in Puerto Rico. The best part would be having Mosley, Cotto, Mayweather, and Pacquiao all fighting each other and giving the fans what they want and deserve. This tournament would not be for a trophy or a diamond belt, it would truly be a tournament of bragging rights, it would end all discussion of who is the best P4P fighter in the world.

The sad part about everything I just wrote is that it's all a dream, and a big one at that. The amount of money it would take to get most of those fighters in such a tournament would be unreal. When you reach a certain level of stardom in boxing, a huge ego almost always comes with it and rightfully so, and many times it is the ego that stops a fight from ever taking place. Every fighter believes he's worth more than the next and I can't imagine what would need to take place to make all the above mentioned fighters participate. I do think we'll be treated to another "Super Six" tournament in the future, but I'll bet the house you will not see more than two of the above names attached to it.

Nevertheless, we are lucky, because we are only a few weeks away from the Manny Pacquiao-Miguel Cotto fight. And as each day passes you can feel the excitement grow in the boxing world. And if we are really lucky, maybe, just maybe, we'll see the winner get a fight with Floyd Mayweather or perhaps Mayweather will go in a different direction all together and fight Shane Mosley. Hopefully in the end, it's the fans who will be the winners, and who will get to witness great fights with great fighters.
