TWO UNDEFEATED IRISHMEN OUT TO PROVE THEIR METTLE ON THURSDAY'S SHOBOX PRESENTATION FROM MINNESOTA

By Kenny Perrault

Showtime’s ShoBox series makes its way to St. Paul Minnesota this Thursday night featuring two undefeated fighters, Bernard Dunne and Matt Vanda.

Featherweight Bernard Dunne 13-0 (8 KO’s) of Ireland will face Adrian Valdez 14-2-3 (7 KO’s) in a scheduled ten round bout. Dunne had an outstanding amateur career winning eleven national titles while racking up a record of 119-111.  Bernard Dunne turned professional in December of 2001 scoring a second round TKO over Rodrigo Ortiz. Since the Ortiz fight, Dunne has fought 12 times, all wins, seven of those coming by knockout. Bernard Dunne’s opponent Adrian Valdez is a veteran of 19 professional bouts  on a 12 fight win streak (one fight was declared a draw). His last loss  came against 2000 Olympian Clarence Vinson.  Valdez lost a four round decision to Vinson but managed to stay on his feet throughout the bout. The other loss on his record came in just his third pro fight when he was stopped in the sixth round by Juan Jose Mendez.

Also featured on the ShoBoxcard is undefeated Jr. Middleweight prospect Matt "The Predator" Vanda 31-0 (21 KO's ) who hails from the east side of St. Paul Minnesota. Vanda takes on tough Armando Velardez 17-3 ( 8 KO's ) from San Bernardino, California.

Matt Vanda is coming off a second round TKO of Ron Martinez last April, and will be making his debut on Showtime. Vanda last appeared on national television as the main event of an ESPN2 fight against skilled veteran Sam Garr. A fight in which many thought Garr won but wasn't given the decision in the end. This is Matt's time to prove that he is a true contender in the highly talented Jr. Middleweight division; it is also his chance to make people forget about the Garr fight.

Vanda, who has fought mainly in the St. Paul area throughout his career, brings one of the best fan followings in the sport.  If you haven't seen Vanda before, he's not hard to miss, as he brings more tattoos into the ring than Johhny Tapia.

Vanda's opponent Armando Velardez is a tough fighter who has never been stopped in 20 fights. He has fought the likes of Ian MacKillop and David Estrada. Velardez is coming off a tenth round TKO win against Miguel Angel Ruiz.

The night’s fights will be held at the Aldrich Arena in St. Paul, Minnesota. The telecast begins at 11PM Eastern time on the Showtime network.
