A former amateur fighter and native of Staten Island, New
York, Jack Obermayer had been going to fights since 1963.
A veteran of 23 amateur fights, of
which he won 16, Obermayer never had any illusions about
turning pro, even though he patterned his stance after Joey
Archer.
The South Jersey resident was a writer for Boxing
Illustrated and Boxing Digest. As a journalist, he logged
thousands of hours at countless amateur fights and endless
pro fights. He also had a well known affinity for vintage
diners and steam locomotives.
Obermayer had been ill on and off for the past year due to
liver problems. He is now recuperating from the surgery
that took place in Philadelphia.
He may receive cards and flowers at:
Thomas Jefferson University Hospital
Attn.: John "Jack" Obermayer
